Nat Turner
Nat Turner, in his confessions, shows how he used religion as a way of justifying rebellion. This is what made him kill people, including women and children, even though it is morally wrong. Furthermore, even his confession has got a religious significance. He says that it was an emphasis through the Holy Spirit to carry his assignment. This paper will discuss the way turner uses religion to justify his rebellious actions.
To justify his actions, Nat says that he had a vision where he saw white and black spirits engaged in a battle, where the sun was darkened, and the thunder rolled in the heavens. He saw blood flowing in the stream, and there he heard a voice saying, such is his luck which he was called to see coming whether rough or smooth and that he must bear it. This means he was called to shed blood.
More so, he says that Holy Ghost had revealed to him that the blood of Christ was returning to earth in the form of dew for the salvation of sinners. He says that the Day of Judgment was due, meaning that it was time for the bloodshed where he could be the instrument.
Lastly, Nat confesses that a sign appeared to him telling him to arise and prepare to slay his enemies using their weapons. Then the seal was removed, and he communicated to the people he had confidence, And this is what motivated him to perform his killing duties.
In summary, Nat turner uses religion to justify his actions of rebellion against the masters through killings in the name of visions and leadership of the Holy Spirit to perform the work of the kingdom of God. All this, he goes ahead to support how it was revealed to him, as we have discussed above.
