Rhetorical Analysis of Women Empowerment

Time and again, ideologies are created, propagated, and then developed. The established ideas build a foundation for what is right and what is wrong in social settings. The ideologies can also be witnessed in the image and role of women in our society. Social norms created by traditional culture bring out women as being timid, beautiful, less trustworthy, and deceitful. Media, especially movies and television programs, promote such ideologies. The same media can work towards developing the set mindset people have about women. This paper will focus on examining the role of media in promoting the idea of women empowerment.

Mass media can formulate and spread an idea to a vast population because of its extensive coverage and direct access to the final recipient. It can reach many people with the same message. Mass media has been identified to taint a bad image of women from its television shows, advertisements, and even movies. Women are presented as commodities and objects of desire. The women are rarely presented as independent and thoughtful individuals. Men have always been the primary focus of mass media, and women came second. In most movies that are in the reach of so many people, men are still the main characters. Our society currently is brought up in a way that somehow inflicts the feelings that work, place, and importance of men and women are different. This difference leads to the inequality of women in society.

Several pieces of literature have been reflecting on this matter. The princess by Tennyson literature says that men have the head and women with the heart; men are for the sword and women for the needle. It is so clear how Tennyson feels about women in his art. The plight of women is brought out to be inferior and men to be superior. Tennyson also brings out women as being animals that men hunt. The notion of women being weak is instilled in them since they were young, and they end up accepting their position as society puts them to be. Cultural adaptation in women is different from that of men.

Women are always shown crystal clear that they cannot be men equals, either in doing anything or everything men can do. This idea is ironic because, in some other situations in the current society, women turn out to be stronger than women. The strength of women is nowadays depicted from the existence of women in leadership positions, both in the political and corporate environments. Movements towards women empowerment have been started, and women have proven themselves to have the capability to qualify for similar roles men perform. The movements became successful because nowadays, women are given the same opportunities in education. They have also proved themselves to be up for the task of performing similar functions as men. Women brought society to modify job titles previously known to be men’s jobs to accommodate both genders. Initially, jobs such as fire fighting, mailing services, and police were jobs specified for men. However, nowadays, such jobs also include women, depicting that there is a balance in gender in workplaces.

In the USA, about 55% of the population that joins the workforce every year are females. If this trend continues, the workforce will consist of mainly women and end up dominating the economic system. The presence of women in the workforce will enable women to attain financial independence, which allows them to explore different areas of the society and also gives them political influence. Recently, from different countries, we have seen women contesting for the top seat of the presidency. In the year 2016, the general election in the USA was between Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton gave Trump a run for his money during this election period. Government positions being held by women in the White House are also quite many. Hillary Clinton’s bid for the presidency is a clear depiction of women’s empowerment.

Women redemption does not aim at making them hate men but making the society in which women can prosper as being influential and self-respectful individuals. It is wise to build a community that trains girls not to be afraid, to become strong, and tears should not be their trademark identity. A society that embraces women can be achieved by producing literature that brings out women as being dominant, thoughtful, and capable of existing as independent individuals. Most mass media programs should depict women assuming leadership positions and being equally intelligent as men. According to Stache (1913), the avenging women’s narrative portrays women as a caution against corruption in the system.

In conclusion, more media material should be made relating to women’s empowerment. Their empowerment will give them the power to make their own decisions and make them lead an independent life. It will also increase their positive contributions to society and even in many crucial sections of life. Women empowerment is not only a solution to the many challenges women face but also a solution to many issues affecting countries in various areas such as social, economic, and political.
