Internship Diary

Week 1

Tuesday

The internship at SEM, a company involved in the laboratory industry began on Tuesday at 8 am with contract and ID confirmation. Not much happened on the first day. Orientation around the company as regards what the company does, its mission and vision were done on this day. The company deals with lab devices and systems (“SEM | Laboratuvar Cihazları Pazarlama San. ve Tic A.Ş”, n.d.). My internship at the company was to learn about search engine marketing.

Friday

A meeting was held to recap the week at the company’s conference room. In the meeting, the interns were expected to give highlights concerning the week. Each intern had worked in at least one department. Everyone was expected to provide a recap of their experience. The company had introduced its team during the week; hence the chain of command, departments and their function, product and service catalogue were well articulated.

Week 2

Monday

I was given the duty of managing the company’s social media platform. A social media presence is essential in enabling sales, marketing and advertising of the company’s services and products. I worked under the supervision of the social marketing manager, who in turn worked under the marketing department manager. There was a lot of hand-holding as this was my first day in the role.

Friday

A meeting was held to break down the activities of the just ended week. Different department heads gave their opinion as regards all the interns’ efforts. For example, it was pointed out that we needed to showcase confidence since most of us were still unsure about our duties and responsibilities. Overall the second week ended on a high note.

Week 3

Tuesday

I worked in the customer service department at the customer service desk due to an absent employee. The duties included dealing with customers face to face as well as over the phone. The phone calls were particularly overwhelming with a total of forty phone calls. Some of the customers were friendly, while others were not. Articulation of needs differed, making the task more challenging for me. Most calls involved follow up on lab device systems and equipment which I was not well versed. The day was thus challenging for me.

Friday

The day involved a departmental meeting. On this day, I, therefore, had a meeting with the customer service department as everyone gave a breakdown of their week. Despite my difficult time at the customer service desk, the department head applauded my efforts. It was here that I realized the importance of customers and excellent customer service. Communication skill is essential when dealing with customers as it directly affects sales. Even though the week had started on a low note, it ended well, and I learned a lot more about the company services.

Week 4

Monday

I was back in the marketing department, and my supervisor gave me the responsibility of improving the company’s Google ranking. The aim was to have the company website rank on top of the Google search engine. To do this, I was to focus on the social media marketing aspect, which was a different way of marketing from what I knew. So far, everything I had learned about social media marketing was theoretical. I soon realized that practically applying it was a challenging task.

Thursday

I had enlisted the help and guidance of my supervisor, and three days later, I had successfully improved the company ranking. To improve the ranking, I developed the website company content, particularly the product catalogue and introduced an affiliate marketing concept on social media platforms such as Face book to increase traffic to the company website. The week, therefore, ended on a good note as I achieved the week’s goal.

Week 5

Monday

The week schedule included reporting to the HR department and school supervisor. The essence of the report would be to talk about what we had learned. Luckily the head of the internship had indicated that we might be required to report at the end of the internship. Even though we were aware of the possibility, most of us did not pay much attention to it. The internship was to end after seven weeks. The report was needed in the fifth week instead.

Friday

I gave a fifteen-minute PowerPoint presentation that included my experience at the customer service and marketing department. Even though the customer service experience was short-lived, it was the most challenging. I had never dealt with customers on a personal level before the internship. Giving the report was the equivalent of what the company did as regards daily and weekly meetings. It was thus another learning experience as regards communication and teamwork.

Week 6

Monday

The week would involve marketing outreach activities. The exercise was carried out to improve ranking through increased website traffic. The first day included the identification of video blogger and influencers. Influencer marketing involves the use of people with influence due to popularity to market products and services (“Influencer Marketing | What is Influencer Marketing?”, 2012). It is in this regard that most companies use influencer marketing as a social marketing strategy.  I settled on bloggers as well as celebrities and brands for the task.

Friday

The week had been tiring and challenging as it involved identifying not only potential influencer portals but active portals as well. Inactive portals are likely not to realize sale turnover. It is, therefore, essential to use active portals. The relevance of the bloggers, influencers and brands chosen has to be factored in as well. Relevance, in this case, refers to impact as regards lab equipment and services.

Week 7

Monday

The week started by creating marketing content for the company. The training went on from Monday to Wednesday. The challenge aimed to improve ranking. Content creation involves research to come up with creative content. I realized that online marketing is not as easy as it seems (Adams, 2017). However, under the guidance of my supervisor, I was able to harness my content writing skills.

Thursday

At the end of the three days, I had successfully completed the content creation challenge. Though the exercise had been challenging, it turned out to be a great learning experience. As the week came to an end, I emerged one of the best interns. The experience was challenging but very insightful and offered a great learning platform. At the end of the seven weeks, I had created content, added influencer portals and affiliate marketing concept to improve company ranking. Sales were expected to increase as a result.
