Looking from a Theoretical Lens Perspective

In a qualitative study, a framework is essential to help the researcher anchor or focus while moving forward with the research. One such framework is the conceptual framework. The role of a conceptual framework in qualitative research is to establish why the study is relevant and how the research design accurately answers the research questions (Laureate, 2016). For example, it helps map out what is required in the study, such as data collection tools to be used based on previous knowledge and the observations made. In this regard, the conceptual framework helps define the purpose, goals, and intended audiences of the study (Ravitch & Carl, 2016). The other role of a conceptual framework is to situate the research within multiple contexts. For example, it helps the researcher define the background of the research in a way that provides new inquiry to the field (Ravitch & Carl, 2016, p. 37). In this regard, a conceptual framework helps the researcher determine how to frame or define the context of the study to add new knowledge to the research. Also, a conceptual framework guides the development and refining of the research question (s). Once the research question is developed, it assists in matching the methodological parts of the research to the research question(s) (Ravitch & Carl, 2016). For example, if the research question is what causes poverty in urban areas, the conceptual framework helps the researcher understand if a qualitative study is the most appropriate to answer this question.

The conceptual framework also allows the researcher in the selection of theories and approaches that are appropriate to the topic and ensure thoroughness. The researcher aims to understand what theories or methods would best or completely answer the research question (Grant & Osanloo, 2014). A conceptual framework assists the researcher to recognize that one theory would be appropriate for one inquiry but not another. For example, if the researcher desires to study the work-life balance for working women, a feminist theory would best anchor the ideas and themes that emerge compared to a critical theory. The conceptual framework shapes the best theories and methodologies that better shape the accurateness of the research findings. Further, the conceptual framework not only helps in defining the methodology of the study but also the research design. For example, should the researcher use a case study or a phenomenology design (Ravitch & Carl, 2016)? The conceptual framework helps determine the most effective research design to generate the desired results.

A conceptual framework also acts as a mechanism for writing and dissecting the research analysis, as well as study findings. It is important for the researcher to know the best tools for analyzing and evaluating the study findings. For instance, it helps the researcher determine whether to use content analysis, discourse analysis, narrative analysis, or any other. The shape of the framework guides the researcher on the best path based on the findings. Conceptual frameworks also evolve and change based on the researcher’s understanding of the various parts of the study (Ravitch & Carl, 2016, p. 37). The researcher could have determined that the methodology should follow a specific route but changes some aspects or all aspects of the methodology as the study progresses. As the various constituents of the study come together, the researcher knows what best helps address the research question and how to do it (Ravitch & Carl, 2016). In this way, the conceptual framework allows the researcher to be more discriminative and selective when it comes to the methods, design, theories, and approach to the overall study.
