My job as a sales technician at this company, International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) has brought with it an array of experiences and knowledge by the day. My job revolves around working with my sales team to come up with new and innovative ideas to increase our customer base, which involves coming up with suitable advertisement strategies and methods of maintaining customer satisfaction. This ensures maximum sales are made by our company, and as much of the goods produced enter the market for the consumers.

In my few years in the job however, a few glaring problems have come to my attention. The underutilization of social technologies in the advertisement and sales of products has become a major worry. Social technologies are largely associated with social media platforms, but have a much broader spectrum. It refers to any technology that enables social interaction in whatever manner. These technologies have grown even further in importance with the dawn of the social media age.

A larger portion of the human population is now on social media, be it Facebook, twitter and other social media platforms. This has presented it as a ripe field for advertisement of products that most companies have taken to, to increase their customer numbers and, consequently, the profits. A single ad on any social media platform, or an online website set up by a company has the potential of reaching billions of people at a go, increasing traffic and the chances of one purchasing a product. IBM, however, lags behind in this aspect, instead relying on the usual advertisement channels such as television which, though effective, don’t get as broad an audience as when done using the latest social technologies. A proper plan of action is, therefore, needed to ensure the company asserts itself into the face of social media to improve their sales.

The most viable solution to improve the advertising power of the company would be to employ a whole new social technology strategy. This would be through employing the use of business-oriented social technology software that enables the easy communication between the customers and the company, and also records data on customer preference to be used in streamlining services to better suit the customer’s tastes. I recommend the use of most social media platforms, more specifically, Facebook and Twitter, being the largest platforms with billions of users between them.

The setting up of accounts on both platforms is easy and comes at no cost. Once an account is set up, any post gets seen by a huge number of people depending on the number of followers the account gets, which again can be maximized by setting up an online marketing team to track the activity of the account and figure the best ways to increase the following. The solution will help keep up pace with most companies which have taken their business dealings online, and realized excellent returns as a result. The lack of commitment to embracing social media marketing, has contributed to the significantly lower success in the market, and further widened the gulf between the company and competitors.

The social technology strategy would be most suitable to the company, due to its already established popularity in the market. The already large following and a reliable brand would mean less effort put into attracting customers to their social media profile, hence the following would grow at a steady rate. This promises positive results in terms of profit and increase in customer numbers within a short time of taking the step. The company, also, being a leader in the technology field would find it easy embracing the new innovation that is social media and incorporate it into the workings of the company, while still maintaining its identity. The fact that it is also free to set up and use, while offering the company massive profits, is perfect for whatever budget plan the company may have in place.

In conclusion, the advertisement channels employed by the company, though sufficient at this time, are not so sustainable, especially with the radical changes in the market headed by the rapid takeover of social media in almost all aspects of everyday life, business included. The above measures will go a long way in increasing the profits for the company, and will improve customer service which will be made easier through the social media channels. The above measures also have an advantage in that they promise results within a short period. This is a move that is in the best interests of our company and, and will go a long way in assisting the sales team in delivering our services better.
