San Diego’s low-income families and communities of colour
San Diego statistically harbours a considerable number of people of colour, making the county highly diverse. For decades, San Diego leaders have held a vision of advancement that would be argued out to be restricted on a set of industries and constructed on a disjointed social-economic landscape. As a result of this, lines, both literally and metaphorically have subdivided the region at each level. This has separated those living in the south from better job opportunities, education, and proper housing to the north. Most of the working families and the community of colour go through daily challenges since they fall under low-income society members. Statistically, San Diego harbours the fourth-largest homeless region.
San Diego’s low-income families and communities of colour face recurring challenges from an inconsistent burden of toxic substances and environmental pollution. This is considered to be environmental racism, which can be defined as the strategies and government activities, educational institutions, corporations and other large organizations with the power to influence most people that, deliberately or inadvertently, result in families and communities of people of colour being exposed to even worse environmental hazards. The environmental health coalition, however, has been fighting against this kind of pollution.
In San Diego, there is an unclear race between income, pollution and race. The county has vast concentrations of families and communities of colour living in facilities that emit air pollution, as well as facilities that operate with toxic chemicals and overtime generate hazardous waste. The biggest issue faced by administrators in the county is finding the subsidy and choosing the region, to begin with. San Diego faces grave concerns in both the law enforcement and fire departments. The conditions are worsened by unequal legal and political rights, due to the lack of public resources and segregation of the affected groups from public policy-making.
In my opinion, there are several effective ways to address those issues and improve the conditions of families and communities of colour in San Diego. An extensive set of priorities should be placed on San Diego’s monetary pillars, to guarantee great defence against national budget cuts and alterations in manufacturing, which will lead to periods of accelerated growth. Health care and housing costs should be subsidized by the federal government, to curb the families and communities living in the county from commuting to surrounding areas in search for residence. A municipal government agenda that is dominated by a broad interest of the well-being of working families and communities of San Diego should be implemented as well.
