The documentary tries to explain the effects of a book written in the 1500s called “The Prince”. The prince is a letter by Niccolo Machiavelli to a king he was offering advice to the ruler of Florence at the time, Lorenzo de’ Medici. Niccolo Machiavelli was a King’s advisor who lived in Italy in the 16th Century. Niccolo Machiavelli was also a diplomat and political behaviour. The book contains information about to get power, and how to keep control. The documentary explains whether it is good to be feared or to be loved as a leader in today’s world. Therefore, this paper talks about the aspect of fear and love in political situations. It is better to be feared than to be loved because fear does not change over time, unlike love.
In the book, Niccolo Machiavelli answers the question of whether it is better to be loved than to be feared. Machiavelli adds that it is better to be loved and to be concerned, but if he is to choose a single option, it would be fear. Love can be broken when it is advantageous to them, but fear remains constant due to the strength caused by the dread of punishment. Furthermore, Machiavelli adds details on how to avoid hatred and contempt. Machiavelli advises that leaders must delegate difficult tasks to others and keep the popular ones to themselves. The leader must never be hated, and therefore, it is advisable to appoint a deputy to do the dirty work. Any leader can rely on fear to build power. The fickleness of human nature makes humans do whatever they seem fit for themselves, and that is why in modern days, there are attempted coups. In countries where the citizens fear the leader, no one can try to overthrow the leader.
In conclusion, Machiavelli tries to explain that being loved is a reciprocal relationship, and the person in relation can stop loving you at any time. On the other hand, fear is one way, and it does not if one has the means to make someone concern. There has to be some particular aspect of fear between the employer and the employee. The book contains information that teaches one to achieve and maintain a specific position as a leader primarily through fear.
