NURSING CRITIQUE ARTICLE

Summary of the article

Hospitals have over the recent years faced a challenge curbing the spread of Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). The journal aims to develop interventions that lead to preventing further infection of people with the disease using qualitative and quantitative means. The disease continues to spread despite the efforts to put in place the necessary checklists that would help reduce the impact it has on people. Treating the infection is complicated and expensive for the patient; hence it has become difficult for patients to afford or even the hospital to demand more payment so that the patient can go through the process.

The research question of the article

The research aims to conduct a quantitative study and from the results come up with interventions that can help medical professionals be in a position to treat CAUTI and also prevent it from spreading.

Significance of the study

The researchers try to evaluate the impact of introducing multimodal initiative in all CAUTI hospitals and determine if it will reduce the burden of treating healthcare-associated infection of CAUTI. If the multimodal initiative launched will be positive, health care practitioners will have a chance to manage CAUTI and stop it from further spreading effectively.

Type of research conducted in the journal

The researchers use several designs to complete their study. Some of the research designs used in the journal include the following; the article sought to critically asses the hospitals bundled throughout the city, such as the ICUs in the hospitals. The article focused on the hospitals that had a large number of CAUTI infected patients. The pilot cohort recruitment was conducted in 2016 at a period of ten months. However, the article postulates that there was no standardized procedure on how the hospitals were selected for the research study (Mack & Stem, 2017). There was the use of the questionnaires to collect data from the various patients affected by the CAUTIs. The questionnaires were also used to investigate the existing strategies used to treat the CAUTIs in various hospitals clustered throughout the state’s such the ICUs. This type of research design was critical since it helped the researchers to collect multiple opinions of the patients on various treatment methods they preferred for the prevention of the CAUTIs infections.

However, the use of the questionnaire used to collect data on the article was not enough to investigate additional measures meant to prevent CAUTIs infections. The article could have incorporated other types of data collection techniques such as face to face interviews to help collect sufficient data to even illiterate CAUTIs infection. Incorporation of the questionnaires and face to face data collection techniques could have enabled the researchers on the article to collect adequate data necessary to develop a more effective CATIs preventions measures.

Outcomes of the Research

The primary outcome derived from the research involved the entire CUATIO rate based on the types of hospitals studied (including non-ICU and ICU). The secondary outcome derived from the research involved a complete utilization of the urinary catheter device amongst the hundred patients every day.

Overall the article employed significant measures necessary to investigate the current measures used to prevent the CAUTIs investigation. For instance, the article employed superior statistical measures to analyze the data collected from the research such as mean, median, and the percentages of the data collected from hospitals regarding prevention of CAUTIs. The use of statistical methods to analyze the data collected from the research such as ratio, mean, median and percentages were effective to enhance the accuracy of the results. The article offered an excellent basis for the development of more superior strategies to curb the spreading of CAUTIs infections. However, the article did not employ the use of sufficient data collection techniques. The research could have incorporated more data collection techniques such as face to face interviews to accumulate more data from the hospitals under the study.
