Professors are one of the critical resources that universities have in achieving their goals. They possess skills and knowledge which contribute to the excellent quality of the institution in different ways. In the past years, changes have been made in the higher education sector, which has altered the traditional understanding of the role of a professor. Most universities have adopted the change and now implementing it in their program. In 1988, “Classification Standards” were presented during the industrial awards, which documented the roles of many academic staff, including professors. Universities have put this documentation into use through the development of setting up individual selections in academic areas. The documentation was intended to explain roles which university professors may take part in while in institutions, community and schools.

One of the roles professors play is providing academic leadership to students through teaching, research and the development of policies. This does not only happen in schools only but also entails the community and education sector. This leadership is closely linked to professional and scholarly success within a specific discipline.  Professors are recognized as the leading individuals in the education field worldwide. In most cases, their leadership roles extend to the community, industrial and commercial areas to policymaking in their relevant field. Their role, which is widely include teaching, carrying research, offering services and problem solving where the education field is required. Every professor is needed to contribute to policymaking and be able to manage an institution in any circumstance. These are the qualities of a professor that contributes to achieving institutional goals. Also, during the promotion, confirmation and appointment processes in institutions, such attributes are the one which should be looked at first before looking at others.

A professor in an institution is a person who gives instructions to students in vocational and academic subjects, which are beyond the level of high school. They engage in activities such as teaching courses related to various topics such as biology, they work together with the students taking degree or certificates in helping them add skills and knowledge in building their career, they prepare and organize curriculum of different courses ensuring that it meets the required standards, they give out assignments and plan lessons, carry out assessment of student’s achievements, advise students, conduct experiments and research to advance knowledge and to supervise students who are at their doctoral level. All these tasks are divided into different areas where specialization is required. Each professor has a particular field that he/she is good at and works in helping students attain their success.

For a professor to achieve these ambitions, he/she must have some attributes. The attributes include experience, education qualification and consistency. Job experience helps the professor to be able to solve issues using experience, unlike when one does not have, which will be challenging to handle the problem. Education qualification is essential when it comes to the field is placed to work. When one is qualified can deliver good quality knowledge relating to the area. Consistency, on the other hand, will help to minimize the fear and increase the courage of handling various tasks in the area.

Standard reforms are essential and play a central role in the education system. The aim of these standards is focusing on the attention of each one in the order, which is one of the requirements of students to learn rather than the institution majoring in increasing its resources. Besides, the standards to be set should be work in establishing a learning technique that is common to all students’ illegalness of their background or where the school.  These are among the reasons why the standards represent a considerable shift from a prevailed institution and an experienced one. Content standards aim in guiding and instructing through the provision of focus on practices and policies (Ravitch, 1995).

At the time of policing, guidelines should be provided for assessment development, opportunity development, and instructing to help in steering the professor’s decision on what he/she is about to teach. Standardization sets an expectation in the whole institution and also provide a lead to the school in academic matters. The expectations are used in evaluating the institution’s program. If it’s working effectively, the policies are implemented fully into the system and vice versa. For these policies to work effectively, it requires the qualifications of a professor, which includes 3-7 years’ experience of teaching in an academic institution, consistency in work and academic success in the relevant field of education.

These standards are determined using the following: the basis of the content, cognitive complexity, reasonableness, parsimony and its focus and lastly, its clarity. Standardization is useful when it focuses on the essential skills and knowledge in a particular subject. Students can solve issues quickly and gain knowledge and expertise with proper standardization. It should also challenge the students in a way to demonstrate their capability in the field study. When students and professors work together in experiments and researches, professors can achieve their roles successfully. The standards before implementation should be revised and well assessed to increase its performance level.
