With the increase in information technology governance in public and private sector industries, new opportunities have been created for innovation governance and policymaking (Cao, Wen, Chen, & Li, 2016). Competencies of a policy analyst
A policy information analyst has some pre-defined job roles which he/she needs to carry out. They are:
- Gathering statistical data to explore the problem at hand and offer a probable solution
- Once the problem is analyzed, the policy analyst suggests a feasible solution to the cause. This may include finding out the leading cause of the problem. Policy analysts may also use various other methods such as surveying, analysis of focus groups, and other tools to predict and outcome of the precautionary measures.
- Once a policy has been implemented, policy analysts are assigned with the task of evaluating the possible outcomes of the policy and compare the results with the pre-calculated projections which were made before the project as implemented
- Policy analysts are required to share their reports with the public, the media, and the policymakers who are most likely to consider the merits of the information provided. Other ways of information sharing are public speeches or interviews in mass media.
The main job of the policy analysts is to deal with policies. Hence, the policy analysts must have the knowledge of the policy systems, and how they are made and implemented. This will help the policy analysts to understand the placement, purpose, and the design of the policy for any given program. Also, the policy analysts must be competent enough to understand the proper utilization of the information practices in the ongoing projects. For this, they will have to update themselves from primary surveys to more advanced research methods (Schneider, & Ingram, 2017).
Conclusion
Both the public manager and policy analysts must have some required set of competencies to be selected in their respective positions and carry out their duties. Both of them should have updated knowledge about the ongoing policies being adopted in the companies.
