African American experiences
Essay Two Compose a thoughtful, 5-paragraph (or more) essay in which you identify at least three texts you consider to be most memorable that you have read in THIS COURSE this semester. The essay should explain how these texts increased your understanding of either African American Literature or African American experiences. For each selection, be sure to mention how the work reflects one or more of the literary trends (i.e. characteristics or aims) of the period in which it appears AND/OR the historical contexts from which it emerged. Essay Guidelines Only ONE of your selections can come from either Unit 1 or Unit 2. No, you cannot choose a selection from both of these units to count for two of your three texts. You had an opportunity to discuss such works in Essay One. Consider works that have been either assigned in Units 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7. Yes, this means you may write about musical selections from Units 6 and/or 7. [unique_solution]This essay should include a CLEAR thesis statement that names the works under discussion AND indicates how these selections increased your understanding of African American literature or African American experiences. Body paragraphs, then, will elaborate upon your rationale. Example theses may be worded as follows: “In reading X, Y, and Z, I have a greater understanding of….” OR “A, B, and C are three texts that illustrate for me….” These are simply examples of how you might phrase your thesis in response to this particular essay prompt. This essay should be formatted according to MLA-style (double-spacing, 1-inch margins, 12 pt. Times New Roman font, properly headed). Give the essay an original title. NO TITLE PAGE IS NEEDED; only provide a properly formatted title block. Be sure to submit the essay as a WORD document. Other types of software are not easily converted in D2L. If you have problems with this requirement, PLEASE LET ME KNOW WELL IN ADVANCE OF THE DUE DATE FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT. Since this is a reflective essay, it can be written using first-person point of view. You are not required to incorporate direct quotes from the selections, but it should be evident from your discussion that you have read and thoughtfully assessed what you value most in each work. Paraphrased or summarized material, however, should be documented in-text as well as on your Works Cited page. The essay will be assessed using the grading rubric located in the syllabus. Any instance of plagiarism will result in an automatic zero for the assignment.
