Questions: 1. How does the violence of the Early and/or Late Middle Ages show in their art, architecture, sculpture, and literature? For each of these Humanities topics, give a specific example and explain how it demonstrates the violence of the day. You may use examples from the Early and/or Late Middle Ages (mix and match). If this is one of two essays, you need just one example/paragraph per topic. If this is the only essay you write, you need at least two examples/paragraphs per topic. This is a formal essay. Do not use slang, contractions, personal references, idioms, or colloquialism. 2. This is a document analysis. The document comes from Isabella D′Este′s husband (Francesco) when he was captured by the enemy and put in prison. The enemy demanded money AND their eldest son as a hostage. Isabella refused to send her son, since there was no telling what the enemy would do to him. Here is her husband′s reply: Francesco’s Response: My wife, Isabella d’Este, daughter of Ercole I d′Este and Eleonora of Aragon was regarded as ″the first lady of the world″. She enjoyed the benefits of a classical education in one of Italy′s most distinguished courts. We married when she was 16 on February 15th 1490. At that time, Isabella was already recognized as an exceptionally woman. We spent little time together, due to my predilections for military life, and Isabella′s interests in diplomacy. I understand that we didn’t spend much time together, but I trusted her and respected her as my queen. She was really helpful in political affairs, especially diplomatic decisions. She had always thought before she acts and put other people’s benefits before her own. I have been held by the Venetians; and the condition for my release was to have my son, Federico, being kept as hostage by the Holy Roman Emperor. If she would just send Federico, I’ll be released. But no, she refused to agree to it and sent me a horrible letter. I understand that she loves Federico, but what about me? Did she not think that once I was released, I wouldn’t do my best to rescue Federico? How can she not obey my orders and act independently on her own. I trusted her. But I was wrong. That whore of my wife is the cause of it all. Send me into battle alone, do what you like with me. I have lost in one blow, my honor and my freedom. If she does not obey, I’ll cut her vocal cords. Now for this question write an essay document analysis: is a public or private document?; what bias is present?; what is the tone of the letter?; what does it say about Francesco?; and what does it say about Isabella? Finally, what does it tell about Renaissance life for nobles? Each response to a question should be a paragraph in length (three or more sentences) or two paragraphs if this is the only essay you write. You may use I, me, we (personal references) but do NOT use slang, colloquialism, idiomatic expressions, contractions, or cuss words. This is NOT a response letter. This is a document analysis covering all of the above questions in an essay form. Make sure you have an introduction and conclusion paragraphs.
