E-Folio Essential IX: Baccalaureate Generalist Nursing Practice

Essential IX describes generalist nursing practice at the completion of baccalaureate nursing education. This Essential includes practice focused outcomes that integrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes delineated in Essentials I - VIII into the nursing care of individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations in a variety of settings (AACN, 2008, p. 29). Furthermore, this essential encourage professional individuals to provide compassionate care informed by a scientific base of knowledge, including current evidence from nursing research. Also, it emphasized that the integration of knowledge and skills is critical to practice (AACN, 2008, p.29). Master critical thinking is a must for graduate because we need it in all nurse task whether is general assessment, focus assessment, or recognizing sign that needs immediate intervention.

Health assessment is a class that all Associate Degree nurses should take as a review after graduation. This class was very informative in the sense that it reviewed head to toe assessment system by system, not only that we discussed some highlighted red flags during assessment of some systems. The Shadow health compressive assessment was the review of all the system study individually. A plan had to be done at the beginning to keep the nurse focus on how she was going to do the assessment. The assessment was long but worthy. Everything we learned through out the semester, help with this last assignment.  The class content emphasized on professionalism, skilled, ethics, and communication.

Essential IX stated that graduate should demonstrate clinical reasoning within the context of patient centered care to form the basis for nursing practice that reflects ethical values, knowledge acquisition related to wellness, health promotion, illness, disease management and care of the dying is core to nursing practice; also acquisition of communication and psychomotor skills is critical to providing nursing care (AACN, 2008, p.30). By doing these nurses will be following the code of conduct that states principles expressing responsibilities, and defines the rules expressing duties of professional to whom they apply (Pozgar, 2016).

Reflection

A month after I started this class, my critical thinking during assessment improved. I gained confidence in communicating with patient.  My manager stated seeing changes in my admission assessments and stated she was impressed. Shadow Health wasn’t very easy in the beginning, I was all worked up during the assessment because I felt like I did not know what I was doing. But during the assessment itself, I really enjoyed what I was doing. This essential prepares nurses to care for patients across the lifespan, from the very young to the older adult (AACN, 2008, p.30). Giving us enough knowledge, and skills to assess and diagnose patient.  Depending in our zone of interest, whether is pediatric, geriatric, or just adults medicine we need skills, and knowledge to better take care of our patients. I am finishing this class today, not completely an expert, but in a much better place than I was last year. I know now that the different quadrants of the abdomen can not only tell me about bowel sound but also about the different organs behind each quadrant. Shadow health compressive assessment definitely correlates with Essential IX, because I can’t spend a day at work without assessing a patient, and the more I assessed, the more I mastered my skills. So, the review of all system, subjective and objective data was definitely needed. Essential IX prepared nurses to understand and respect the variations of care, and increased use of healthcare resources inherent in caring for patients who are vulnerable due to age, the very young and the very old (AACN, 2008, p.30). Also, as a discussion we brainstorm on how to assess psychiatric patient, and patients with substance abuse. One of the take away was that, as a nurse we should always demonstrate compassion, empathy and determination to help improve our patient quality of caring regardless of the situation. All these skills that we learned in his assignment is exactly what Essential IX is about, conduct comprehensive and focused physical, behavioral, psychological, spiritual, socioeconomic, and environmental assessments of health and illness parameters in patients, using developmentally and cultural appropriates approaches (AACN, 2008, p.30). This assignment was definitely for me a gift and I am going to make good use of everything I learned in Shadow health assessment.
