 Significant activities by the group

The group has undertaken significant activities since the last journal entry. We have been having frequent meetings to discuss the future of the group. During these dialogs, a contract of expectations was developed that provides the guidelines of the way members should conduct themselves. The agreement includes instructions on key areas such as communication, participation, commitments, problem-solving, decision making, conflict, and procedures. Further, we did a group presentation of the contract. Notably, all members made a promise to abide by the agreement. Undertaking outdoor activities is essential in strengthening the relationship between group members. Consequently, it allows the smooth implementation of proposed changes. As such, we organized a group adventure on coming Saturday. However, due to the unpredictable weather, we suggested another activity suppose it rained. In that case, we will meet at my apartment and make food. Similarly, it helps build trust within the group.

Connect

Notably, the assigned readings remarkably connect with our group. These readings have played a vital part in the accomplishment of the set goals. Through the readings, every member was assigned a role. Even though different roles, collaboration among team members is a key priority (Stahl, Law, Cress & Ludvigsen, 2014). As indicated in the readings, the group has cultural, demographic, and cognitive diversities. The readings offered substantial help in addressing the issue. Maintaining open-mindedness has proved to be an important approach to solving diversity matters. In an attempt to maintain a harmonious environment during discussions, we appointed a harmonizer. The readings further helped in role delegation. Initially, duties are assigned depending on skills. However, roles were rotational to allow members to enhance their skills in various areas. Additionally, the readings have helped me become an active member. Indeed, the connection between the readings and the group has helped tackle numerous challenges.

Since the establishment of the group, I have observed several things. Like in other groups, diversity was a critical agenda. Significant differences were observed, particularly in culture and demographics. The participation level of members who felt like minorities reduced significantly. Also, I have found that conflicts must arise in every group. We had issues in the distribution of roles. Some members felt that they were being underutilized. As such, the implementation of arbitration procedures was a significant task (Stahl, Law, Cress & Ludvigsen, 2014). In our group, the issue was addressed mainly in the contract of expectations. Time management was another problem. Initially, most members were late for meetings. Due to the magnitude of this issue, it was addressed urgently by choosing a timekeeper.

Reflect

Markedly, I have learned important concepts from the group, which I can apply in my life and future groups. The team has helped me acknowledge and respect diversity. This is essential when interacting with other people. Moreover, the group has equipped me with practical approaches to resolve differences. The group has significantly improved my communication and interaction skills. In the future, I will interact with people correctly. Personal accountability has always acted as a major challenge. Through the help of the group, I can hold myself and others accountable. Even though I have always liked solving problems alone because it is a fast way, through the group, I have recognized the importance of teamwork. Most importantly, I feel that the group has trained me to become a better leader.

Though the group was effective, there are several things that I would do differently. In our group, roles were rotational. However, I prefer fixed duties based on the skills of the members. This is because it improves the efficiency of the group. Also, most people prefer working on roles they are well-equipped. Unlike in our group where individual accountability and self-evaluation was not a core function, I would largely emphasize on these approaches.
