cataract

A cataract is an eye condition in which clouds at the standard lens and it starts when the eye proteins form a clump that hinders the lens from sending clear images in the eye. This condition is divided into three main types, which are; nuclear cataract, cortical cataract, and subscapular cataract, which affects different parts of the eye. According to McGhee, nuclear cataract affects the nucleus of the eye lens while cortical cataract is characterized by edge and white like opacities which begins in the lens’s periphery. Though this condition does not affect vision much, the affected person will see blurred when looking at cloudy places (McGhee, Zhang, & Patel, 2020). Though there are no known predisposing factors to cataract, taking of steroid drugs can increase the chances of being infected by the disease. Some of the symptoms which are associated with this condition are such as; trouble with eyeglasses, nearsightedness and foggy, filly and blurry vision. Risk factors concerned with this infection include diabetics, obesity, high blood pressure, older age and smoking.

The primary treatment for cataract is through surgery though in some instances, the doctor might prescribe some medicine, but only if the use of glasses can maintain the condition. The primary surgical method used is phacoemulsification which entitles the use of ultrasound waves that breaks eye lens as well as removing the pieces. The second surgical method which is used is extracapsular which removes the cloudy parts in the eye Len by a long incision in the cornea; which helps in giving the eye a clear vision (Thomsen et al. .2017). After the surgery, the doctor places an artificial intraocular lens in the eye to help in replacing the removed part during the operation. According to recommendations from different authors, surgery is the best method of treating cataract as it has a high chance of success, and in addition, it is safer compared to other methods used.
