Freedom of speech and expression

Freedom of speech and expression is having to right to tell your opinions without legal penalty, restrain, or censorship. Everyone has different ideas and opinions concerning things, and without the freedom of speech, that person cannot tell his/her opinions and contribute to the wellness of the community. This freedom helps people to grow in their thoughts and know what to contribute to different situations. In this article, we will discuss reasons why mill claim speech freedom is absolute, analysis of freedom of speech and freedom of action according to Mill, and finally, compare Madison and Mill’s understanding of speech freedom and the significances of both views.

According to Mill, free speech is absolute. Mill believes that freedom of speech is straightforward because if an expression is censored and the expression is true, then individuals are denied the chance to interchange truth for error (Van Mill). This absolute freedom of speech enables individuals to clearly and lively understand the true things of this liberal world. Mills claims free speech is straightforward, and no one should bring an objection about it, although some do. The censorship defender can react to the pint of absolute free speech by arguing that we can put our trust to censors to obtain truthful expressions and opinions from the false ones. Hence censorship can exist without denying individuals access to the truth about certain opinions.

Mill then terms censorship of expressions as infallible. He argues that people possess common sense and no need to suggest individuals as not being infallible and are capable of being denied the false expressions through censorship filtration of views to remain with the truth only (Van Mill). There is no and will never be a perfect censor because, in recent years, information was suppressed; we have come to know that was true. Mill says that they are no more infallible than persons. Mill continues to argue that for individuals to fight their fallibility, the free expression should be promoted to learn to make accurate and truthful expressions.

Mill says freedom of speech should not be silencing the peculiar evil of opinions, which robs the human race; they see both sides of the expression(Van Mill). Without freedom of space, individuals are deprived of the chance of exchanging error for genuine expressions. The human learns the truth from colliding with mistakes. The truth is valuable; hence people should be given a chance to arrive at the true by themselves through looking at those error Mill claim.

According to Mill, freedom of action explained in the harm principle states that individuals should do whatever they want or desire as long as it not affecting others negatively or harming them. If these actions harm others, society is capable of preventing such actions from happening. The relationship of free speech and freedom of action is that it gives one free will to do and say anything in his/her account, meaning the consequences that follow due to your speech and actions should befall you.

Both Mill and Madison argue that people should be free to speak their thoughts and mind without fear of reprisal (Cost). Both think there should be no restriction and silencing of a person’s speech; instead, every individual should find his/her way to the truth through incurring false expressions on the way. Republicans should be given the same chance as politicians have because politicians believe they have the right to control everything that affects them negatively. A free republic is the one that is governed by rules and laws that the republicans have participated in making them. From both perspectives, free speech should be termed as absolute. I also believe that every person should be free to speak his or her mind. By this, one can grow in the field of expression of what is right and wrong.

Freedom of speech has many important in the lives of people and the country. Freedom of expression is the backbone of human rights. It holds up all other rights of the enabling human community to develop and progress. The actions of expressing thoughts enable the community to changes their thought and opinions regarding different situations. Freedom of space gives every individual to express his/ her thoughts; hence you can even live with a person whom you disagree because of different opinions you all have and sort out issues to come with the right path for both of you. Freedom of speech helps people to grow morally and emotionally through learning from others.

In conclusion, it is evident that without freedom of speech and freedom of action, republicans could be denied information, which might be true through conserving. Every person should be free to speak his mind and bring different views of a situation. It through this freedom of speech that societies grow and individuals come to know the truth about the world. Freedom of speech should be among human rights because it is the backbone and existence of all other rights. The only time there is no freedom of speech is when politicians want to dominate it, citizens, by hiding some ideas from them.
