Effects That Smartphones Has on Cognition and Other Health Concerns

Smartphones as technological gadgets ha eased our daily lives through easing of access to information by use of the internet. Smartphones have saved a lot of time that was previously used to do tasks that are now done from the comfort of one’s home by using a smartphone application. It has eased access to food by delivery service app, news since it can be accessed using a smartphone and also the business is run by use of a smartphone. Even though there are more pros of the usage of a smartphone, the cons can not be ignored. Smartphones bring about cognition and health problems to their users. The paper will focus on radiation, stress, cyberbullying, immorality, and obesity as effects on the health of smartphone users.

Radiation

When a person is using a smartphone, the gadget releases radiofrequency energy which when in contact with the skin may lead to the long-term effect of skin cancer (Zaghloul, N, 2019). Constant exposure to radiofrequency energy over a long period will have a radiational effect on the skin. Also, the smartphones release low-temperature frequency and the skin emits high-temperature frequency when collide they cause radiational poisoning to the user (Bauer, J et al., 2018). This is evident as the radiation effect is more evident on teens since they spend most of their time on their gadgets.

Stress

Teens have resulted to spending most of their time on the smartphone on social media or streaming videos hence no time is spared for reproductive activities that help in mental development. They fail to learn methods of problem-solving, how to handle tense situations ad dealing with stress(Vahedi, Z, 2018). By using smartphones for long periods, they are more prone to being exposed to content that may bring about stress. Since they have no ways to deal with the stress it brings the long-term effect of depression.

Immorality

Immorality among teens as they are the most users of the smartphone, get exposed to immoral sexual ad violent content. Since they are no restrictions on which content can be accessed, it influences young people to participate in such acts. This explains the high immorality rates among the young generation as teens try to mimic what they find on the internet(Vahedi, Z, 2020).

Cyberbullying

Being the most common con of smartphones, cyberbullying is the lowering of self-esteem of a person through posts and chats on social media. For people being indulged too much on social media, they become potential victims of cyberbullying, too much bullying may lower the esteem aggravatedly leading to some committing suicide as they can’t be able to handle the shame from cyberbullying (Lee, H. S., 2017).

Obesity

Obesity is a condition where a person accumulates high levels of fat leading to an excessive gain of weight. It is mainly caused by eating junk food and lack of enough exercise. Excessive usage of smartphones limits time spend outside hence little exercise is done (Thomas, J. G, 2013). As a result obesity numbers have increased over the years due to less time spent checking our health and more time on smartphones.

In conclusion, more time spends on smartphones has led to cognitive and health problems for smartphone users. Even though gadgets are helpful in our daily lives, there need to be restrictions on their usage.
