Several factors have contributed to inequality and urban social problems globally. Research has shown that the 21st century is the worst hit by these social problems in the history of the world (Nijman & Wei 2020). In this paper, there is a comprehensive of the high rate of unemployment and overpopulation, which are social problems that result from inequality in urban areas. The two challenges explore the serious challenges people in urban centers are going through.
There are numerous connections between these readings. The challenge of overpopulation in the urban centers is the main factor leading to unemployment in the urban centers (Nijman & Wei 2020). When the population increases, there is a scramble for the small job opportunities available. This is the leading cause of the high rise of unemployment in urban centers. The two challenges bring the theme of poverty to the urban centers. The high rate of unemployment and overpopulation complements each other since they go hand in hand. It is overpopulation that causes a high rate of unemployment hence rising poverty rates in the urban centers.
The reflection of these social problems caused by inequality is out of my life experience. The issues discussed in this reading are happening in New York City. Like other cities globally, New York City is experiencing inequality, leading to overpopulation and unemployment that raise the poverty rates (Maroko et al., 2020).
The best solution that can help to combat these problems is encouraging urban-rural migration. This can be made effective by setting industries in rural areas hence attracting people to rural areas. This will help to cope with overpopulation, thus reducing unemployment rates in the urban centers. These criteria can best help alleviate these problems.
In conclusion, problems in urban centers can indeed lead to a world threat. There is a need for collaboration between different bodies to do away with issues facing urban centers. In my view, changing most youths’ attitude that good things can only exist in urban centers will help combat the challenge. Again, it is essential to encourage different industries and organizations to invest and set their projects in rural areas to reduce the rural-urban migration and instead initiate urban-rural migration.
