The Use of King’s Theory of Goal Attainment in Illustration of How and Why you Would Present the Importance of Actively Involving Patients in Their Care

            One of the reasons nurses actively involve patients in health care, according to the theory, is to help patients achieve their health goals. Therefore, nurses must treat patients’ physical ailments and their emotional needs ( Caceres 2015). When nurse’s sympathies with the patients, they promote a cooperative relationship with patients ,which helps to root the causes, symptoms and explanations that help the nurse to provide proper diagnosis and suitable treatment to the patients. This goal can be achieved through the nurses’ knowledge. Nurses use their considerable knowledge to protect patients from risks and repercussions of illness, disability, as well as infirmity. They also protect patients from the risks and consequences of the treatment of illness (de Leon-Demare et al., 2015). Nurses furthermore safeguard patients from the risks that occur when illness and vulnerability make it hard for patients to perform the activities of daily living and acts like; breathing, going to the toilet, turning, walking, or even swallowing.

The second way nurses actively involve patients in health care, according to the theory, is to obtain a patient’s health history. The motive of gathering a patient’s health history is to collect personal information from the patient (de Leon-Demare et al., 2015). Information gathered from a patient’s medical history is a core determinant of a medical diagnosis. Appropriate history-taking is, therefore, a foundation skill for a patient’s health history. This data will help the nurse and the patient collaboratively develop a plan that will promote health, address critical health problems and reduce persistent health conditions. The information gathered by the nurse from the patient must be kept private. Nurses are not allowed to disclose information regarding the patients’ health history. Gathering patient information is achieved through an interview held by the nurse on the patient (Caceres 2015). The nurse comes up with questions concerning the patient’s health. For how long has the patient has been suffering from a particular disease, diagnosis used to treat the disease, is there anyone in the family suffering from a similar illness, and is the patient allergic to any medicine or meal. This data equips the nurse with the information required in ensuring proper treatment is given to the patient.

The Applicability of the Theory’s Concepts to Daily Advanced Nursing Practice

The first concept of the theory is nursing. Nursing is a process that consists of action, reaction, and interaction among the patient and nurse in that they exchange their knowledge in the nursing field. The nurse-patient relationship has common goals, concerns, and problems as well, and they investigate how to attain the nurse-patient goal (Adid-Hajbaghery & Tahmouresi 2018). The concept applies to daily advanced nursing practice. The knowledge gathered through the interaction among the nurse and the patient helps them acquire their goals, hence strengthening the nurse-patient relationship. The second concept of King’s Theory of Goal Attainment is individuals. Individuals are intelligent and reactive human beings. They express some attributes such as thinking, perceiving, feeling, setting goals, and looking for ways to attain goals and make decisions (Caceres 2015). The concept of the individual applies to daily advanced nursing practice since it helps the patient and the nurse express their feelings and achieve the nurse-patient goal.

The third concept of the theory is health. Health is a powerful experience in human beings’ life. The concept of health helps human beings to improve their internal and external environment ( Adid-Hajbaghery & Tahmouresi 2018). Health is one of the concepts that apply to daily advanced nursing practice in that it improves humans’ standards of living environment. The fourth concept of the theory is the environment (de Leon-Demare et al., 2015). The environment is the surrounding in which human beings operates. The environment can either be internal or external. The concept of health applies to daily advanced nursing practices since it helps people interact thoroughly with their surroundings.

The fifth concept of the theory is action.  Action is the order of behaviors, including physical and mental activities (Caceres 2015). Mental and physical actions include having control over a situation and trying to achieve goals. This concept applies to daily advanced nursing practices in that it helps present conditions to the mind and apply physical conditions to the activity ( Adid-Hajbaghery & Tahmouresi 2018). The sixth concept of King’s Theory of Goal Attainment is Reaction.  The reaction can be described as the response to the order of mental and physical behaviors. The concept of reaction applies to daily advanced nursing practices since it helps solve problems mentally and physically.

Review of Research Work that Previously Used King’s Theory Goal Attainment

            The research work used in the work case study that uses King’s Theory of Goal Attainment is all about a patient who had difficulties dealing with during previous shifts. Nurses should be aware of how every patient wants to be treated (Balasi et al., 2020). Some patients require unique treatments, and others are looking for attention. The patient was demanding attention from staff all through the shift. The nurse’s work ensures that the patient is in good condition and is attended to but not paying attention to a demanding patient. During the assessment, the nurse made sure that they created extra time for the patient because the opinion of every patient counts in health care. About entering the room where the patient was, the nurse asked the patient now that it was time for them to be discharged, how their take about it was and how they felt about the idea. Still, as it was the patient’s norm to complain, they said they delayed their discharge, and they were disappointed by this. However, accepting that patients perception are unique and valid they should be listened to according to the health care unit, the nurse had to give the patient an ear and try to spend some time and listen to them as a way of sympathizing with them since they have to show empathy to their patients (Fronczek & Rouhana & Kitchin 2017). Nurses show care to their patients through making eye contact with the patient, sitting in a chair next to the patient when conversing, listening to the patient attentively without interrupting, and ask patients what they need.
