Introduction

Lorraine Vivian Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun is a typical play with a disguising main character Hansberry’s who hails from a black affluent family but associates herself with the poor young kids. She tries to emulate the poor kids by hanging a key on her neck an aspect that raises contempt from other whites. Her father dies at the age of thirty-one while Hansberry thrives in arts and advances the theme of the fight against racism.

Characters and relationship

Ruth Younger is a typical character acting as a peacemaker when family explosions take place. She is a mother to Travis who is liked by the entire family thou he displays adult brain games an aspect that makes him wasted. His father is a great alcohol imbiber thou his mindset is shifted to an enormous business venture when he discovers that his wife Ruth Younger would receive a $10,000 check from his father’s insurance. The family besides has a single intellectual (Beneatha Younger ) who is normally proud of her status of the sole beneficiary of college education

Plot summary

Walter Lee is desperate since he is not financially enabled supplying his family. He thus results in extensive drinking. There is however hope in the fact that Ruth (his wife) is expecting a $10,000 check from insurance upon the death of her father. Ruth doesn’t, however, like the idea of investing in liquor an aspect she is against till she entrusts Walter with some money. Aggrieved with Walters business partner escape with the money, the family has a torturing period coming together again.

Critique of the play

Hansberry professionally combines the aspects of scene dodging to factor in sociological and politics turns. The laid avenue thus provides a better platform for expression of racism. However, the audience expects a stronger protagonist, other than the feebly displayed Walter. The fact that dramas revolve around him crowns him as a protagonist. He is, however, an inferior character in the family.

A Raisin in the Sun is both an enjoyable and thrilling play utilizing symbolism to feature contemporary aspects of racism amongst the whites and blacks. It expounds on the psychological torture bore by the characters involved due to the impoverished status that makes them resolve in drugs.
