I believe for many politicians to get a following, there is a need for them to convince the citizen by giving them the reasons why they are the ideal candidates. Most of the politicians use rhetorical appeals and strategies for their target voters (Motta). As a result, most of the politicians end up holding political positions in the country. This paper will focus on the speeches released by two American politicians, one from the Republicans and the other from the Democrats. I will analyze the address published by Donald Trump, who is a Republican and investor Tom Steyer who is a Democrat. The analysis will base on the claims the two politicians made in their speeches. And also, the rhetorical appeals and strategies they majored in to try and convince their target voters. The essay will also illustrate how the politicians effectively or ineffectively engaged with the masses that were behind them. Finally, this paper will propose how these politicians can effectively use rhetoric strategies to communicate and engage with the voters effectively. Hence, giving them a higher chance of winning the upcoming presidential elections in the United States.

Donald Trump is the current president of the United States; he was a businessman before he decided to do politics. He is a member of the Republican Party. I will focus on Trump’s speech on immigration and his response to the Democratic. The speech focus was on the new plan on immigration, and the project would make sure that the interest of the Americans is first. It includes jobs, wages, and safety. According to him, the plan will stop illegal immigration and fully secure the border. Tom Steyer is an American philanthropist and liberal activist. This essay will focus on the speech he released in the 2012 Democratic National Convention. He is a member of the Democratic Party. His speech was focusing on the things that President Barack Obama will deliver once elected as president. His speech mainly concentrated on the issue of energy and the policies that Obama had, which would maximize the production of clean energy, hence minimizing the effect of environmental pollution. He tries to explain to the voters why he is against the candidacy of Mitt Romney. In his speech, he believes Obama is the future of America because if elected, he will be able to bring independence and security in energy. Besides, he will facilitate a safer and cleaner environment and a country full of job opportunities. Both Donald Trump and Tom Steyer will be vying for the presidential seat in the United States in 2020.

Trump claims that millions of immigrants lawfully enter the society of the Americans, and they usually contribute to the growth of the country. But his main issue is that the existence of illegal migration is hurting many Americans. He also explains how the border facilitates the entry of illicit drugs. The drugs that include heroin, meth, cocaine, and fentanyl. And these drugs lead to the death of many American citizens. The speech states how the broken system of the United States has led to the illegal migration of children, his estimation being 20,000 migrant children (Baker, 781). The speech insists on how in every three women, one is sexually assaulted. It is as a result of the trek up through Mexico. In the statement, Trump proposes the solutions to the problems that he has stated, one of his proposal include the use of Homeland Security. The security will have technology that will enhance the fight against drugs, weapons, and contraband.

Trump had a suggestion for more agents and immigration judges. That will help in processing the unlawful migrations. He also emphasizes the request to Congress to assist in the facilitation to close loopholes in border security, after that helping to return the illegal children, immigrants, back to their home in a safe and humanely manner. Trump further states how some members of the Democratic party were in support of a physical barrier at the border. They later changed their mind when he became the president. He insists on how the Democrats in Congress do not want to acknowledge the crisis. He explains how the border promotes illegal migration leading to the deaths of innocent people and how he has met with the families that have been facing such calamities. He finishes his speech by calling on Congress to pass the border bill. He also tells the citizens to call out Congress and tell them they need the border, hence making their borders secure.

Tom Steyer, in his speech, describes Romney, who was a presidential competitor against President Obama, as a person who would not reduce the dependence of Americans on fossil fuels. He also insists that if Romney becomes president, he will gut the investment Obama had on clean energy. He claims that Romney would instead pour millions to outside oil companies that are funding his campaigns. He believes Obama is a leader who has a better plan for the citizens. Hence they will have an economy fueled by a safe, sustainable, and secure energy supply. Tom insists that big things are happening in America, and that is because of Obama. He mocks the idea that Romney has about a government being split into tax breaks and vouchers, therefor solving all the problems of the Americans. He tells citizens to embrace a vision of a clean and healthy planet. In his closing remarks, he states how president Obama is making smart investments that the Americans need. His vote for him will be an investment in jobs, energy security, and a stronger country.

Trump used rhetorical appeal and strategies to show the voters that he has the interest of the Americans. He also makes it clear that he appreciates the existence of legal immigrants but not the illegal ones. But for those who are in the country illegally, they will use the right humane ways to return them to their homes. He maximizes his strategy by portraying the Democrats as individuals who don’t have the interest of the Americans at heart. His speech works effectively since the target audience. Since he makes, sure everything he proposes will be beneficial to them and not the people who are against him. He shows how his service is more of the people he presents, compared to immigrants. Tom use uses the rhetorical appeal and strategies to explain how he doesn’t share the vision with Romney but has the same idea as Obama. He makes sure he outlines the manifesto of Obama in a way that will make their supporter not vote for their opponent. He describes Romney as a leader who will not have the interest of the citizens at heart but his self-interest. That can be seen when he states that Romney’s main aim is to make sure he gives millions to people who are funding his campaigns. He effectively reached their target voters since he outlined the benefits that someone would relate to quickly. He is finishing the speech stating that he will vote for Obama and outlining the reasons it increases the confidence of the voters to vote for Obama.

I believe a candidate who wants to be president should use rhetoric appeal to explain to voters how their opponents cannot deliver. Outline some of the failures that the opponents had during their private and public service (Van de Walle). They should also invest more in telling the voters why they are the ideal candidate for the position. In addition, they need to outline problems and propose solutions that they will use to settle the issues arising
