Analyzing Drama in Fences play
Analyzing the drama of the play, Fences written by August Wilson. The setting of the play takes place in the timeframe of the 1950s in the front yard of a little shack identified as Moscow’s residence. The characters presented in the clip of the scene is Troy, (Denzel Washington) and Rose Moscow (Viola Davis). The dialogue presented in the scene is a heated discussion near the front porch of a shabby shack. Rose is expressing her frustration about her support in the relationship as well as her contribution and place in the relationship…” what about what I want”. (Wilson 22, Act I, Scene II).
In the 1950s men such as Troy is recognized as the “breadwinner” of the family. An African American man during this time and currently is primarily the backbone of the household. However, Rose, his wife began to state her position and contribution to the household, and this was not acceptable to him as a “man”. The character Troy demonstrates the theme of love, the American dream/nightmare, and alienation/otherness. In my opinion, all these themes are verbalized when Troy states, “Rose, you’re not listening to me. I’m trying the best I can to explain it to you.” It’s not been easy to admit I’ve been in the same place for 18 years” … (Wilson 22, Act I, Scene II) Troy has so much pride, love, commitment and anger all rolled up inside. Even though he is committed to his family and is providing for them the best way that he knows how. He lacks the affection and understanding that the family also needs.
