Annotated Bibliography Information

A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called “References” or “Works Cited” depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).

An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following.

Summarize
: Some annotations merely summarize the source. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book is about, what would you say? The length of your annotations will determine how detailed your summary is.[1][unique_solution]

For your research paper, you will need to find two research articles to support your ideas. Note that research takes time, and we want to ensure we are being ethical in our practices.

From your two articles, create two different annotations and submit them as a single document when the assignment is due.  This is an opportunity to get your research done ahead of time.

Requirements:

  • MLA formatting (12 point font, TNR, double-spaced, heading, header)
  • Each annotation should include:
    • A citation for the article (what will appear on your works cited – author name, article title, publication, etc.)
    • Summary of the article and explanation of how it is helpful in your overall research (200-250 words)

The distribution of points for your paper are below:

Offer your heading on the first page only. Header includes last name and page number (you can see the Tip Sheet for Formatting in Microsoft Word if you have questions on headings or headers!)

Roberts, Dorothy.  “Reproduction in Bondage.” Killing the Black Body: Race, Reproduction, and the Meaning of Liberty. Vintage, 1997. pp. 22-55.

Alphabetize your entries, just like you will with your works cited page.

Roberts connects the treatment and abuses against slave women to more modern issues with the idea of Maternal-Fetal conflict.  She explains that this term is used to describe “the way in which law, social policies, and medical practice sometimes treat a pregnant woman’s interests in opposition to those of the fetus she is carrying” (40). Though her chapter also deals with topics such as the cyclical and timed nature of slave pregnancies and the idea that enslaved Black women were attached to plantations because of their children, Roberts’s connection between the ideas of maternal-fetal conflict in the lives of enslaved women…

This text is useful and informative in relation to my research because it focuses primarily on the oppression of enslaved women, specifically through their bodies and ability to reproduce.  Roberts’s entire text also examines how slavery has had damaging and lasting effects on society with particular emphasis, of course, on African American women and the ways these women’s bodies are portrayed, medicalized, and policed by dominant society.

Include a summary of your text AND how you’ll connect the text to your own ideas!

Word count: 168 (this is short of your requirement so that it would fit on a single page…!)

Shoot for an annotation that is between 200 and 250 words.  Include a word count.

Your next entry goes here.  No need to have entries on their own pages.  Just ensure you have alphabetized your entries, offered word counts, etc.
