Arguments against gun control
The issue of gun control has sparked significant controversy among Americans today. Guns have become a significant problem, with all the reasoning about why the government is tightening the laws. The anti-guns believe that ownership of firearms is a constitutional right in the second amendment, and people should be able to possess firearms. Pro-gun control believes that guns are the main reason for the crime problem in society. In my opinion, gun control will have an insignificant influence on crime rates. While people might be blaming guns for the increased crime rates in the country, they should understand that guns do not kill, people do. In addition, most of the weapons owned legitimately are rarely used for crimes but instead for self-defense, collecting, and hunting, which are all legitimate reasons to own a gun. Even with increased gun control, criminals can continue to commit crimes and hurt people without legally possessing a firearm.
By imposing gun control, the government would be breaking its promise to protect the rights of its citizens. According to the second amendment, ” a well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” This amendment stands for two goals of a collective and individual defense from aggression and violence, which are well recognized by the congress. This second amendment secures the right of people to own guns, and the government should not be allowed to declare who should or should not bear a firearm. In 1993, President Bill signed Brady Bill 1, which was the first infringement on the second amendment. The regulation increased the waiting period on handgun purchases to five days to ensure that felons were not buying guns. However, this was not the real plan as it had been declared illegal for felonies to own a gun since 1968. The Brady bill also banned the public from buying semi-automatic rifles as well as other military firearms. Most criminals do not but their weapons from stores but instead get them from the black market and theft. This means that the increased regulations on gun control would only make the legitimate owners of guns encounter scrutiny, bureaucratic control, and scrutiny. At the same time, criminals continue to thrive in the black market.
In a study conducted by Tyler, the results indicated that approximately 51 percent of criminals expected to get a gun from the black market the same day they get out of jail. While Brady bill recommends recording and keeping track of gun ownership for security reasons, in the case of militia, the National Guard would be the only guarantee of a free nation. People must understand that the president being the commander of the National Guard, can federalize any time he wishes, and without individual protection, the state would have no protection. With the records and tracking of guns, the federal government would also know which citizens possess weapons. The fact that the president can access all information concerning the distribution of National Guard firearms was probably why the second amendment was passed to protect the people.
An increase in gun control would not bring down the number of crimes in the state. The pro-guns control assumes that just because a person owns a gun, they can go around shooting others. This was the main reason why the registry of weapons was necessary. However, people should understand that this is not necessarily the case as they are still under the law. In the list provided for 100 states with the strictest laws against gun ownership, Illinois was ranked number nine. However, the country was also reported to have the highest number of criminal activities, including violence and homicides.
