Introduction
Decision-making is a good leadership skill that is not always an easy thing. Making a decision is a bit complex than to choose a strategy. The aim of this article is to show the basics of the decision-making process. It is useful and limits an individual in coming up with decisions from one’s point of view which can result to overlooking vital information, this may come out as a potentially poor decision (Ramser, 2003). Sound decision-making has a positive effect on one’s project his team and career success.
The first model is Autocratic decision making, it need high efficiency as well as a low end of buy-in, and the decision is made by several people, not the leader. This type of decision making takes the short time they are demonstrating the expertise and power though the best decision is made( Hajizadeh et al 2016). When overusing it results to low buy-in and a team relying on one direction from the leader prior to taking action. The leader has total control and owns the decision. An individual is responsible for the outcome of the decision. The leader does not rely on other people’s idea they are responsible for coming up with information concerning the situation and how they understand such situation. In a case of an emergency situation, the autocratic style is considered the best option ( Ramser , 2003). Despite the fact that this model is very useful it has some disadvantages .For instance, there is effort d effort from leaders that carry out the decision than expected. Employees are also affected by the decision if not included during making the decision, as a result, their morale and effort may suffer though not predictable sometimes (Rose et al 2016). Consulting decision has low efficiency offering more buy-in. After seeking input from others then the leader makes the decision. It performs if leaders communicate willingly with other peoples such as professions who persuade him or her. Resulting decisions depend on dialogue and input; they are of high quality and also benefit from the buy-in of people implementing them. It is a collective and participative since the leader is involving other people in the organization. Due to the fact that the leader deliberately asks and is encouraging others to take part in decision making and give their ideas, perceptions and information and knowledge of the decision(Best, 2016). The leader decides alone. If any kind of decision is made the leader is responsible. The advantages include some group participation and involvement ( Hajizadeh et al 2016) This is mostly useful when an individual is negatively affected by the result of the decision. In most cases, the individual is informed prior implementing the decision and usually feels good about personal involvement. (Rose et al 2016).Having good communication skills and listening carefully to collected information makes a leader to accurately understand the situation and coming up with the wise decision. We can also say because it involves all people in the organization this is time-consuming there hence no enough security.
A consensus decision is low on efficiency, though high on the buy-in. In this case, decisions need maximum participation and based on the team itself. During this process, the leader is providing options useful in showing flexibility during leadership. The leader has maximum control of the decision. The complete group is involved in the decision. The leader should not be blamed for the decisions outcome (Ramser, 2003). The complete group is now responsible for the outcome. There is no freedom since everyone has to agree with the decision. The benefits are that there is group commitment having a responsibility for the results. It leads to Teamwork and good security all individuals have a stake in the good outcome of the decision ( Hajizadeh et al 2016). It is very accurate and we have the high probability of success since so many decisions are made during the creation. The process is very slow and takes time when making the decision. It is also very tiresome to involve everyone in the organization. It requires skills and training for the people in the organization to work together (Best, 2016). In conclusion decisions are made in different situation by either a group or an individual or both based on the issue to be addressed.
