Benevolence

Benevolence is one of the most significant virtues among the well known five constant virtues. It manifests itself in one’s inner mind of love and compassion, especially for those people avoiding harm or those that envy everyone around them. In terms of one behavior, benevolence demands one’s amiability, rather than wrangling with others in doing evil things. In order to achieve how to cultivate attentiveness to benevolence, the individual should make use of Confucian version of the Golden Rule: It is grounded on what one wishes for oneself, what one should not do to anyone else around him, what does one recognize as the best desirable for oneself, what one ought and willing to give or grant others. According to the Confucian point of view, virtue is based on the existing harmony with others, usually produced via the ethical practices of growing identification of one’s interest and other people around them (Reilly, and Stapleford 267). In other words, as parents treat their children, a benevolent person will always spare no effort of helping others, he does it with even risking his entire life by not necessarily thinking of being paid.

Righteousness

Unlike benevolent, righteousness entails one’s thinking and acting from his point of view in addressing given aspects of life. Righteousness demands rational action from the individual, self-restrained geared towards resisting temptation as well as the fortitude to one’s lifelong duties. In other words, righteousness is all about preserving one’s integrity and dignity while serving their lifelong duties.

Propriety

This is another interesting part of the constant virtue of life. In prosperity, loyalty, chastity, fraternal duty, filial piety, and respect are the main contents which explain prosperity as a whole. From its ancient period, ranging from sacrificial rights, prosperity can be deduced to signify general human sense geared in particular human behaviors in given hierarchical order. In ancient society, there existed the relation of father and sons besides the relation of the monarch and the subject, which were expressed. Similarly, husband and wives, teacher, and the student, elderly, and young were equally expressed and shown the needed adherence. Even though these relationships differ, they equally demand full respect as well as a modest difference to others, which is essential in any set up (Reilly, and Stapleford 269). The spirit of equality, as expressed, is vital and a requirement of prosperity virtue. This mostly applies to the relation which one perceives to be unfamiliar with.

Wisdom

Wisdom, as many my put it, is another essential virtue that entails the innate knowledge one has that enables him to make given judgments in life. It directs an individual in making choices on what is right and what is wrong, good or evil in relation to those who are relying on his judgments to solve a given aspect in life (“Is Confucianism Appropriate As A Core Curriculum In The Liberal Arts Education System Of China 12). Wisdom is necessary for the practice of given moral behavior without which an individual becomes irrelevant in society. In a real sense, this virtue precedes the rest, and all other virtues are grounded on this. In other words, wisdom is essential in one ethical life, social, and skills in which the application of common sense is always vital.

Fidelity

Fidelity gives the external perspective of an individual. This comprises one action, words, and mind as a whole. In other words, it is a form of how one’s honest can be expressed and gauged at the same time. Unlike other virtues, fidelity is key in terms of human perfection. It is a foundation of other virtues in which they become authenticated. In other words, the other four virtues are inseparable in that without fidelity; they are rendered useless. The most important aspect of fidelity is that they are inherent in child and they can only be lost as a result of unfavorable external influences.

Therefore, the five constant virtues have great significance in modern society. Even though, in modern society, they have relied on the law in their administration. Law only restrains people, unlike the five virtues which teach the best way of living by restructuring their mind. Therefore, I will prefer the use of virtues to supplement the use of law since it is the best way of unifying society.
