Marine biodiversity refers to the significant number of species presence and abundance in the oceans and seas all over the world. They have a lot of significance in both the ecosystem and to human beings. Marine biodiversity is essential in the protection of water resources (Roberts, 1280-1284). This is because the natural vegetation cover helps in controlling water runoff and act as a cushion in extreme events such as a flood. This, therefore, prevents the degradation of aquatic habitat. Marine biodiversity also is essential in providing food for both humans and the ecosystem’s food chain. This is because it allows for raw materials for the food chain, and even 6% of the animal protein consumed by humans. Marine biodiversity is significant in the discovery of medicine. The biodiversity is essential in medicine manufacture and also provides a chance to the discovery of medicine for diseases like cancer.
Terrestrial biodiversity is the variety of life forms that exist on the land of the earth’s surface. This measures the variation of species and the ecosystem. Terrestrial biodiversity is normally great at the equator and the surrounding. This is because of the warm climate and also high productivity at the equator. The terrestrial biodiversity is not uniformly distributed in the earth due to the small fraction that the tropical forest cover on the earth surface.
Marine ecoregions is a biogeographic classification of the costs and shelves in the world. This was designed as a tool for the conservation of scales. It also accesses the conservation efforts and gaps worldwide. Marine ecoregions are similar to the terrestrial biodiversity since both ecosystems have communities made up of different species. They are also similar in that both ecosystems have a self-sustaining structural interaction between both living and non-living things in the environment. The difference is that marine ecoregion is an ecosystem made of water, while terrestrial biodiversity its ecosystem is made of tropical forest. The sunlight also I another difference between the marine ecoregions and the terrestrial biodiversity. This is because the terrestrial biodiversity is exposed to much more sunlight than the aquatic ecosystem where sunlight is limited.
Marine ecoregions are used to protect marine biodiversity. Through proper biogeographic classification of the cost, it will give a better knowledge of how the species are distributed in the ecosystem space. This will provide a specific place to which protection is applied to stop the degradation of the ecosystem. In the conservation of marine biodiversity, I would prioritize the protection of the habitat of marine life. This is because the destruction of the environment will lead to stress because it disturbs their ecosystem.
In conserving marine biodiversity, my priority will be to ensure that the ecosystem of the marine species remains undisturbed. This will consider the biological response of the species being protected and determine whether the process should continue. Managing human activities is also another factor to give priority in protecting marine life. This is because human activities have a negative impact on marine life. Overfishing tampers with the marine ecosystems, and it affects the growth of other marine lives because it enables. Human activities also lead to pollution such as sewage pollution, which leads to degradation of the ecosystem. It also increases stress to aquatic life, which limits their growth and leads to deaths.
