BLOG RESPONSE TO EDGAR, SARA, AND HANNAH

Response to Edgar

Hello Edgar! I agree with your assertion that soccer plays a significant role in all spheres, as you have aptly addressed.  Soccer is a sport played anywhere anytime to express freedom in social terms and an escape to hard realities across the globe. The world cup attracts people across the world and provides the opportunity for social interaction to people of varied cultures, color, race, and language. It has been used to fight social injustices, such as racism, as we have seen during soccer tournaments.  Political truces have also been reached through soccer (Kuper 2015). The sport also generates revenues in trillions of dollars across the globe for various countries. Soccer world cup is the most iconic event in the world, attracting millions of viewers all over the world. As a result, the Latin American countries, which are set to host it in 2026, will undoubtedly reap hugely.

Response to Sara

Hi Sara! I completely agree with you that the media plays a significant role in providing checks and balances through the provision of information to the general public and holding responsible for the government of the day. Most countries with suppressible media, which can be cowed by the government and those in authority, experience runaway corruption with no one taking responsibility just as you have correctly observed in the situation of Venezuela (Nieuwenhuis 2012, 156). The flow of information is very critical for liberal democracy.  Hopefully, social media will not be gagged to hinder access to essential information needed by the public to hold their governments accountable.

Response to Hannah

Hi Hannah! Although the church and state are two different entities, the role played by the church is very critical to the running of the state. The church’s indulgence in matters governance in Latin American countries, particularly in difficult times, has proven timely, thus, restoring the hope of the many citizens who would have perished in the hands of their oppressors in the government. As you have mentioned, there is a period when the influence of the church was clipped in the region. However, this does not mean that the church became powerless. The fact that the church mediates in times of conflict implies that the body exclusively understands its role and times of relevance.
