A good supervisor is one that is fair, has a positive attitude, loyal to the organization, great communicator, ability to delegate as well as wanting the job by being ready to be committed to it and love what they do. For fairness, this where the supervisors come up with policies that will equally apply to all parties regardless. In this case, it is where if it is the issue of reporting to work early, then everyone has to abide that regardless of who they are in the organization. Having a positive attitude is majorly about a case where the manner in which the supervisor behaves towards the overall job, as well as performance of the organization, will be key in influencing the manner in which the subordinates view their work hence the need for supervisor to be able to have a positive mindset about the work they are expected to do so that it may encourage the employees to do the same. On being loyal, there is a need for a supervisor to be committed to the long term growth of the firm by making decisions that are in the firm’s best interest.

Successful supervisors are supposed to be good communicators, whereby they are able to articulate the things they would like their subordinates to focus one. Good communication also entails being able to keep contact with employees on a daily basis and informing them of what is happening in the organization regularly. The communication should be prompt. The supervisor should also be able to delegate duties by assigning tasks to their juniors. This has to be done on the basis of merit. The supervisors should show that they need the job by being an ability to show that they enjoy what they are doing and by making plans as well as inspiring others through ways in which they deliver on their mandate.

Other characteristics not listed in the book will include being initiative as a leader, whereby one takes up the measures to address all the issues that they may be experiencing without having to be told. Another key feature would be being punctual. Many times some supervisors usually take advantage of their positions even to do things as they wish; hence they do not abide by the policies of the organizations with regards to timekeeping; hence a good supervisor should always be punctual. Such behavior instills key values in the employees.

Leadership was demonstrated by my supervisor when we had a crisis in the organization in that the salaries had delayed for about four days, and people were already feeling the hit as a result of this delay. The finance department was not saying anything; instead, they were murmurs as to why there was a delay. Our supervisor took the step and called us to a meeting and explained that the issue had been challenged with banks in verifying the normal checking accounts that are usually used by the company is paying the salaries, but the issue was to be resolved that day. This encouraged everyone, and indeed the money was finally paid in that day evening. This was an act of leadership for someone out of the finance department to seek the correct information and deliver it on their volition, yet that is not even within their job description.

The most important characteristics are honesty and a team player. This is because regardless of how loyal, hardworking, or anything one can be if they are not honest and work as a team, then the ability to have positive results will be minimal. Managers lead people; hence they should always be team players, or else they will be resented by those they claim to lead.

Employee turnover affects productivity. Employee turnover, which is the rate at which the employees leave the organization, is a key issue when it comes to the performance of the organization. This is based on the fact that the more the employees leave, the more the organization has to train more since such departures usually mean a reduction in the number of well-trained employees who have the skills and experience to deliver better performances for the organization. So, the more the employees leave an organization, the less productive and effective it becomes since training new ones will take time and resources.

Some of the activities that can be done to reduce turnover of employees will include, provision of better working environment that the employees feel they are part and parcel of the organization. Another one would certainly be ensuring better compensation that is deemed fair and commensurate to the kind of work that employees do. This will be key to ensuring that they are all happy and motivated. The last one will be through proper communication whereby the employees are part of the decision making in the organization, be it directly or indirectly through their representatives.

My total score of a maximum possible score of 32 is actually 28, which is indeed a fair score. People should indeed express themselves in an argument but not with the intention of winning the argument but rather sharing their views so that they may all arrive at a better conclusion. On this subject of expressing oneself in arguments, the only thing I can do differently is listening more and talking less, so that is not about me forcing myself to win the argument but rather listening to the other party more before making any response. When I disagree with anyone, I would simply tell them that even though what they are saying makes sense and it is important, I have a contrary opinion to it and usually go on to list the reasons why I think and believe so. In other words, I persuade the other party to see things from my viewpoint.

Ethics is a set of behavior or moral principles that govern the way people conduct themselves. One of the challenges to ethical behavior is the need to make more profits, which pushes companies to engage in unethical behavior. Lack of moral standards whereby people do not simply stand for something; hence they are ready to fall for anything as long as that will benefit them. Another one is that a number of people have disregards for process and procedures; hence they are ready to explore any short cut as long as it gives them desired goals and outcomes hence unethical behaviors.

The benefits of ethical practices include having good reputations, which are key to winning over customers. Another benefit of ethical practices is reduced legal suits as a result of failing to honor the promises made to the customers. Another benefit would be sustainable development in that ethical behavior leads to sustainable development in the organization since there are no quick shortcuts used to short term glory. Finally, it leads to better performance in the organization since the workforce will be happy and motivated since the organization honors every aspect of the things it promised the employees as well as the customers hence customer and employee loyalty.

Two important things that the managers can do to ensure the employees are ethical is by one is being role models so that the employees can emulate them. This is done by ensuring strict conformity to the set company policies by the managers. The second one is by rewarding the employees who display the highest level of ethical standards within the organization. This will encourage many to be ethical with the aim of benefiting from the rewards.

Diversity is about the many differences that exist at the workplace in the form of religion, culture as well as employee background, which make people see things differently from others. In recent year, diversity has changed to being about culture whereby the focus when one talks about diversity it goes to the cultural diversity. Another one is the change in mindset in that as opposed to where diversity was about people, it is about the mindset that they have about the system regardless of their cultures.

On communication and culture, there is a direct relationship between culture and communication. This is based on the fact that communication is the means through which cultural attributes such as rules, rituals as well as customs are created and shared. Without the existence of communication, it would certainly be impossible for any culture to spread or to be known globally. Communication has also been able to strengthen cultural intolerance. Through the numerous interactions, the masses have become exposed to different cultures. Such exposure has enabled them to live together with each other regardless of the difference in their cultures comfortably. Communication also plays a key role in explaining the process that people go through in adapting new relationships as well as learning of cultures from different communities or groups. The final aspect is that many scholars have cited communication as to the bridge between cultures, which facilitates cultural change.

There have been arguments on the role of communication in eroding cultural differences between communities. Even though some believe that once the communities can talk to each other, they can get rid of the cultural difference, this may not be the case. As a result of communication, many people become so tolerant of the cultures of others. In the process of being accommodative of the other people’s cultures, some end up forgetting about their own cultures in the long run. Communication does not erode cultures, but instead, it instills tolerance, which in turn ensures that there is sharing of cultures; hence people are likely to merge the two sets of cultures by cherry-picking what is favorable to them.
