As a future manager at Amazon, my career field study is on business administration, which deals with the management of a business. Business administration is a vast field that incorporates various management positions. These include human resources, operational manager, financial manager, and marketing manager. Business administration degrees are designed to provide students with knowledge of various business functions. The program covers subjects including accounting, finance, marketing, information technology, and human resource management. Business administration requires more than a high school diploma for an individual to earn a job. However, an associate degree in business qualifies one for an entry-level position while a bachelor’s degree one qualifies for various roles. A degree allows one to advance his knowledge and skills of leadership, management, and strategic planning. Advanced education, such as earning a Master’s or completing a different certification program, gives one a competitive edge when seeking a job. In a business environment, administrators possess skills and practical knowledge in an area of specialty or various areas.

Business administration duties and responsibilities include: directing and overseeing the financial and budget activities of an organization. They also establish goals, objectives, policies, and procedures of an organization or a department. They direct and supervise the growth of a business by improving efficiency, programs, policies, and performance. Business administrators oversee the daily business activities related to the making of products and the provision of services. They consult with external partners, executives, and staff about business operations. They are also responsible for improving business programs by applying new technologies in the workplace. Furthermore, they are responsible for appointing new heads, negotiate and approve contracts (Business Administration 2016).

Some of the top executives’ jobs in business administration include general and operation manager, chief information officers, chief operating officer, chief financial officer, and chief sustainability officers. General and operation managers are responsible for business operations that involve various areas in management. Their duties include managing operations, organizing work personnel, and formulate policies. In some organizations, their functions may be similar to the chief executive officers. The chief information officer is responsible for the overall information technology in the workplace while chief operating officer manages other executives who head the various departments. The chief financial officer is the one who directs the financial objectives of the organization, manages assets and investments. Lastly, the chief sustainability officer is responsible for managing the corporate part of the organization. They are involved in the various key performance indicators that bring sustainability in the organization (Business Administration 2016).

Business Administration Entry level

Business administration is a vast field, and one of the entry-level jobs is as an operations manager. As an entry-level manager, one requires a bachelor’s degree in business or operation, technology, or management. Operations managers are usually in charge of a team, and their specific duties are mainly in managing activities in the production of goods and services. They formulate strategies, manage resources, and improve the performance of the team. Some of their indirect duties are to interact with the other managers in the finance, accounting, marketing, and human resource departments. Some of the responsibilities are primarily on human resources, assets, and cost management. In human resource management, they recruit, train, and supervise staff and ensure that they perform their duties. In assets management, they help in managing the building, facilities, equipment, and ensure they are useful for the operations. In cost management, they examine the financial data of the organization and use it to improve profitability. Cost-efficient programs and quality controls in an organization provides a sustainable work environment. Another responsibility is that they ensure that the processes of the organization, comply with legal requirements. One of the skills that are crucial for one to earn a job as an operational manager is to have excellent communication skills both in written, verbal, and non-verbal.

The employment statistics had a relative standard error of 0.3%, and the wage relative standard error was 0.2%.  The percentile wage estimates for this occupation indicates that 10% of the employees fall under $44,710 mean annual pay group. 25% of them earn a yearly wage of $65,650, 50% of them earn $100,930, and 75% receive a yearly salary of $157, 120. In states with the highest number of employment, California leads with 249,800 employees, and the location quotient is at 0.93. The mean hourly wage in the area was $66.17, while the mean annual salary was $137,640. District of Columbia led within the states with the highest concentration of opportunities within a location. The area had a 2.30 location quotient, which indicates that the country has a higher share than average. Top paying states in operation manager is New Jersey with an annual mean wage of $167,600. Metropolitan areas with the highest number of employees are the New York area, with 155,010 employees, while Olympia-Tumwater leads in the location quotient of 2.14. Bridgeport- Stamford-Norwalk area results in the annual mean wage of $192,260. In nonmetropolitan areas, Northern Indiana has got the highest employment level with 5, 250 employees while Eastern Utah leads in the location quotient with 2.47. The top-paying nonmetropolitan area is the Piedmont North Carolina area, with an annual mean wage of $121,870 (General and Operations Managers 2019).

Employment Outlook of Operation Managers in Nonstore Retailers

The employment matrix for non-store retailers general and operation managers indicate that by 2018 the employment in thousands was at 16.6. This was 2.9 percent of the industry and 0.7 percent of occupation. The outlook suggests an increase in the projected employment by 2028 to 21.0 jobs in thousands. This will be 2.9 percent of the industry and 0.8 of the occupation. The employment percent change in this field is above average as there will be a 26.1 percent change by 2028 with 4.3 employment in thousands (National Employment Matrix).

Ways in Which I Can Enhance My Opportunities as a General and Operation Manager

With different companies venturing into online stores and retail industry, competition has increased, and operations managers are required to be efficient and effective. The job not only requires one to focus on the goals and objectives but to have the necessary skills and knowledge that will ensure he/she runs the business successfully. One has to be able to communicate effectively, think critically, and execute operations efficiently. To enhance opportunities as an operational manager, I have to be realistic, ensure efficiency, quality, effectiveness, and be a leader.

As an operation manager, I have to be realistic with the kind of employees I have on my team. I have to ensure they are well trained as they are a valuable resource to the organization. I should ensure there is an understanding between the employees and be guided by a professional relationship. As a leader, I should be able valid and unbiased in my assessment to them and be able to provide constructive feedback. For one to get an opportunity, it is essential to ensure that the employees have gained proper training. Furthermore, with a professional relationship with members of my team, I should be able to empower them and listen to their ideas (Wiley Admin 2017).

As our daily operations involve managing input and output of resources, I should ensure effectiveness and efficiency in the activities. My evaluations on the various areas have to be constant to ensure that all processes are executed effectively. The business environment has to be focused on the objectives of the organization; thus, communication among the various staff has to be effective, and also teams have to be able to adapt to multiple situations (Wiley Admin 2017).

In a competitive environment like online retail and stores, quality is vital as one gains a competitive edge. Investing in improvements allows one to meet the job demand and reduce the number of competitors. Spending time in training programs, completing education will help in improving my overall performance. With the knowledge in business administration, certified training programs gives one an age in the job market as one’s skill are sharpened (Wiley Admin 2017).

As an operation manager, I have to formulate effective policies and strategies that ensure products and resources are maximized, and risks are at a minimum level. I have to be able to develop plans that provide the goals within the team, staff, and external partners that are all aligned to the objectives of the organization. This is by ensuring cost-effectiveness ways that satisfy the different demands (Wiley Admin 2017).

Lastly, as an operational manager, leadership qualities and skill is vital. As a leader, I have to ensure employees are motivated and empowered to work at their best. This by fostering a healthy working environment and identifying solutions for various problems. Also, the operations within the organization have to be operating smoothly, and the individuals perform at their ultimate best.
