Call to Action Persuasive Speech

Growing up, I have seen many people fall under police brutality; that is, they have been assaulted and harassed illegally due to some issues. It has become quite reasonable in our lives to see a person being mistreated by the police, and no action is taken. On November 13, 2018, a security guard holding a shooting suspect was shot and killed by a police officer. The father of a nine-month son was on duty when a shooting incident occurred at the bar, and he was able to hold the suspect. However, when the police arrive on the scene, they shoot the security guard since he was a black man holding a gun. This a clear example of police brutality in the world we are living. I have conducted various researches to back up my claims. For instance, in the 19^th and 20^th centuries, low working class and poor whites claimed that they were being discriminated against by police officers in the Northern cities. Moreover, almost in the same period, immigrants from eastern and southern Europe and the Jewish also complained of mistreatment from the police to their communities. However, the African American community has been at large, subjected to police brutality (Reiss Jr, 2018). The brutality is due to the antiblack racism among many of the white police departments.

From the cases, I have learned that police brutality can occur to anyone regardless of a person’s race, gender, ethnicity, religion, or class. Our silence is what mainly stirs the occurrence of police brutality (Reiss Jr, 2018). The tactics and prevention measures that the police put up to stop crime is what primarily impacts the brutality. One day, as I was walking down to school, I hear a siren down the street, I rush to the scene and what I see startles me. Two girls, one with a white complexion and another with dark skin, lie in a pool of blood facing upwards. Asking around, I find out that the two girls were gunned down by the police because of refusing to surrender their backpacks. According to the people, one of the neighbors’ called the police reporting that two girls were trafficking drugs in the area. On arrival, the police ask the girls to surrender their bags, but they were hesitant. When one of the girls reached out to her back, one of the cops shouted, “gun,” and a shot of bullets followed after that landing on both girls. The police on duty reported that two female drug suspects with loaded guns tried to harm the police, and they defended themselves.

This was not the case since they did not even check their backpacks to see if there were any drugs or loaded guns. How many such cases have we encountered, and no justice has been done to avenge the lives of such people. We have given the police the power to rule in their terms. In this era, it is impeccably typical to discriminate against a person in any form as long as the criminal justice system labels you as a felon regardless of race. As I learned about the horrors and fears that police brutality comes with, I also learned about myself. I learned that I want to assist in putting an end to it, but I can not do it alone. So, if we need to end the police brutality in our communities, we need to all stand together and demonstrate to see change.
