Cambridge Analytica
- Cambridge Analytica is a data analysis firm, which had collected the Facebook data of about fifty million people without their permission, and used that data to psychological warfare tool. These data collected were used in the digital campaigning of Donald Trump in 2016, which used targeted ads for users. Whistleblower Christopher Wylie had revealed this to the guardian and the New York Times. After this incident, Facebook has updated its privacy policies, and Mark Zuckerberg had put up a post on his Facebook account outlining the responsibility of Facebook in this attack. This resulted in public outrage and Zuckerberg being called before Congress for testifying.
- On 17 March 2018, Christopher Wylie had revealed to The Guardian and the New York Times that Cambridge Analytica, a political data collection firm, had secretly collected the Facebook data of about fifty million users and used them for online campaigning of Donald Trump. This was done with the help of a third-party application, “thisisyourdigitallife,” developed by Cambridge researcher Aleksandr Kogan. Kogan, Wylie, and CA were banned from the Facebook platform later. Facebook owner and CEO Mark Zuckerberg were also called to testify before Congress. The revelation of this incident was made with public protests and resulted in a decline in stock prices of Facebook.
