Caribbean Global Culture
The Caribbean is, according to Richard Hillman, an important part of global culture and the global economy. Many U.S. residents, however, see it as a kind of DisneyWorld with white sands and cheap liquor. What is your impression of the Caribbean as a result of our study and readings for this week?
The Caribbean has a global culture that, in most cases, is misrepresented or interpreted. Besides being the provider of sun, sands, and brews, it has other major art and culture that is celebrated globally. The long period of colonization and oppression is always expressed in their music, art, and literature. The writers from the Caribbean islands are recognized both globally and at home. For instance, Derrick Walcott of St. Lucia won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1995. Besides literature, Caribbean music had a major influence on global society. For instance, the Rastafarian movement, which was founded in 1930, has been adopted both globally and locally (Hillman, & D’Agostino, 2009). Singers such as bob Markey, Erick Clapton Beres Hammond, and peter tosh revolutionized the world of music to both local and international society. The Caribbean is a unique place with virtually every ethnic group globally. As a result, there is a rich and diverse culture ranging from food and lifestyle. Among all this distinct group, each has a trait that it brought the Caribbean. For instance, the Africans brought arts, tales, and legends, religious beliefs, the quality of persevering leadership music and folklore. On the other hand, the Europeans brought along their religion, scientific discoveries, culture, social institutions, and diseases.
Most of the art and music from the Caribbean have a sense of enslavement and suffering. The songs also teach good manners in different challenges people go through. The songs, especially those of Bob Marley, are related to injustices that were being experienced during colonization (Murdoch, 2017). The Caribbean is not just land for pleasure, but it is rich with so many experiences that have continued to influence the w global culture. The reggae and Rastafarian music are widely played among the older and young population across the globe.
