Indian Removal Act The Indian removal act was passed into law on May 28, 1830, by President Andrew Jackson. This act gave the president power to give the lands located west of the Mississippi River to the Native American tribes if they left their homelands in the southeast (OpenStax, 2019). The law specified that the government was required to peacefully, fairly, and voluntarily discuss the removal accords. The law also required the federal government or the president to persuade the Indians to surrender their lands voluntarily. The Indian removal act was very explosive because instead of the government official agreeing amicably with the native tribes, force, threats, and bribes were used to drive the Native American tribes out of their lands. Some of the immediate reasons that contributed to the passing of the Indian removal act in 1830 was the gold that was discovered in Cherokee land in 1829, the state’s right issue and the rise of racism. According to Jackson’s administration, the main reason for shifting the Cherokee Indians to lands west of the Mississippi River was to reform…
Contributions of Women and minorities in the history of psychology Introduction Women have suffered under rules set by various societies. In the past, their work was to give birth and take care of the home. They did not experience equal rights that their fellow gender enjoyed. Matters that pertained to governance, business, and authority were far from the outreach of the women. People claimed that women should serve only the traditional roles in any given society and leave the rest to men. The women therefore, faced various forms of discrimination with different laws and the social attitudes playing active roles in imposing prejudice. Women would not hold property like the male gender, and some oppressive practices made women not have the right to inherit property from their husbands. The women had a challenge, and they were discriminated against and would also face economic discrimination. The banks took them to be a high-risk type of clientele, and they would not even open bank accounts. They were further restricted from accessing credit without signatures from their fathers despite some also having secure…
Civil Rights and Liberties Differences between Civil Liberties and Civil Rights Civil liberties and civil rights are terms that are used interchangeably in most cases, even though they have different meanings altogether. Civil liberties are the rights and freedoms that the constitution grants us to shield us from despotism. Some examples of civil liberties are the right to marry, the right to vote, right to a fair court trial, among others. On the other hand, civil rights are the rights concerned with protecting individuals against being discriminated. Civil rights are mostly concerned with people who have a particular characteristic that might be used against their advantage. Civil rights protect discrimination against individuals based on their race, nationality, religion, sex, tribe, or even based on having a disability. Although both civil liberties and civil rights are granted to individuals by the government, civil rights have an aspect that is protective of the rights depending on the specific characteristics (Stone, 2014). For example, being accepted as a student despite the gender in a particular field of study say engineering is not considered a…
WAR ON COPS Why has the animosity toward the police reached such a volatile point in our history? The animosity towards the police has been intensified by the belief that the police are the principal cause of the homicides in society. People have a notion that the police practice racial discrimination in the execution of their duties to society. According to Heather Mac Donald such movements as Black Lives Matter, has dramatically heightened the perception of the society towards police by claiming that they are the primary threats to young black men (Mac Donald, 2017). The brutality and killing of the black criminals by the police, according to Heather, is termed as racial discrimination of the black, which is not the case. The course has thus advanced the animosity existing in the society towards the policing department while the reality is that the black is involved in crime at a high rate within the society. She argues that the black at the age of 40 commit homicides amongst the fellow blacks, which is blamed on police. She adds that no…
Adolescent depression Adolescent depression is a critical public concern in many nations. In the USA, the issue is even of more significant concern that affects Black adolescents. If the problem is not well handled, depression can disproportionately contribute to an escalation of different mental disorders, academic failures, and other related issues. The recent study that was led by Rutgers University, Black adolescents, usually show depressive symptoms in a different way than individuals of another age and racial groups. The claim thus requires technicians for technicians to take into consideration the issue when they develop appropriate treatment plans. The paper, therefore, shows how Black adolescence are impacted by depression and provide initiatives required to control the situation among the affected race. According to the survey carried by the Journal of Epidemiology, the rate of anxiety, depression and behavior disorders among Black children has increased over several decades, with black Americans topping the list. Also, it is evidenced that Black adolescent who lives in communities that are disadvantaged like of poor environment are more likely to encounter higher levels of elevated levels…
Gender discrimination Gender discrimination against women is one of the threats of a social issue in the United States. Women pass through many forms of oppression and distressing cruelty since they are seen as inferior beings compared to men. In American history, many unfortunate unjust free and lose runs has been subjected to women and society makes little effort to stop it, or sometimes encourages the unkind behaviour. Women were discouraged from getting a better education since the women who pursued formal jobs were perceived to be less feminine. Despite the positive achievements of the woman in American history, gender equality is yet to be achieved. Women struggled to gain equal rights with men, especially in leadership and the workplace, but they found themselves being oppressed and neglected. For example, women were not allowed to vote before the year 1920, making the men choose the leaders they wish to rule them without considering the views of women. The fight for revolution by women and equality remains to be a significant social issue. The paper will describe how women are treated…
Sexual Health and Multiple Forms of Discrimination Among Heterosexual Youth Eric Anthony Grollman Social Problems, Volume 64, Issue 1, February 2017, Pages 156–175, https://doi-org.ezproxy.lib.uh.edu/10.1093/socpro/spw031 Research suggests that inequality in material conditions contributes greatly to disparities in sexual health among youth; however, scholars have overlooked the effect of one manifestation of social disadvantage—interpersonal discrimination—on sexual health. This article uses data from a nationally representative survey of 15 to 25 year olds (N = 955) to investigate the relationship between interpersonal discrimination and sexual health among heterosexual youth. I examine whether exposure to multiple forms of discrimination (e.g., race and gender) is associated with risky sexual behaviors, as well as STI history, teenage pregnancy, and abortion history. The findings suggest that experiences of multiple forms of discrimination are associated with sexual activity, including early sexual debut and multiple sexual partners. However, discrimination is not linked with condom and contraceptive use, or the negative outcomes of (risky) sexual activity. These findings emphasize the importance of examining, rather than presuming, risk associated with youths’ sexual activity. xpats discrimination in Kuwait as a result of racism and the effects of the act in the whole nation Abstract Kuwait is a small country with a majority of expatriates. Approximately 2.9 million of a total of approximately 4million people the whole population in Kuwait are the Expats. There have been incidences of violence occurring between the citizens and the expatriates who come from different communities all over the world. Expatriates are the people who go and settle in Kuwait either permanently or temporary and have left their mother country. There have been several incidences in which Kuwaiti harass the expats because they don’t belong to that country. The Kuwaiti takes that they are the owners of the nation and the expats cannot be treated in similar ways compared to them. This leads to discrimination in many sectors such as labor department, hospital, in business sectors among others. This has led to psychological and mental problems to those who are discriminated against. It would thus be important to stop being blind to racism and take actions to curb this problem…
