Workplace Freedom of Speech Although employees don’t have a right to freedom of speech at the workplace constitutionally, employers need to know that there are federal and state laws in place that were enacted to protect employees when faced with certain issues at the workplace. For instance, according to the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA), employees have the freedom to concerted activity (Croucher et al, 2018). The provision protects employers in actions they engage in collectively with a mutual aim of making better or improving a situation. If an employee made remarks about his employer and his colleagues backed up the comments, such an employee is protected under concerted activity against any action that the employer could take against him. According to Talk of the Nation podcast, three issues were under scrutiny. One case was about Keith Olbermann, an employee who was suspended from work for donating money to political rallies. At the New York Times, there are unions that set rules on when an employee can and cannot be punished. Employees are not allowed to make donations to political…
The Blue Ocean Strategy Competition is a common aspect for every business or firm in existence. Competition can either boost the growth of a firm or kill it off completely by grabbing away the market. Subsequently, as a firm seeking to grow, there are other ways to mitigate competition and to ensure that it stays ahead of the rest in the market and survives. More substantial firms have sought to concentrate on where the competition is high to prove their might or ability to stand above the rest. However, there is a catch in tapping the potential markets yet to be discovered by other firms. In this annotated bibliography, a scholar provides tips to tapping markets with potential where there is still less competition The authors believe that instead of spending so much energy and firm resources in competing with other rival firms, there is a need to create a new niche or environment with potential. Thus they use metaphors to describe the competition and potential areas for rival firms. The authors use red oceans to mean regions where the…
Developing Strategies for Overcoming Communication Apprehension Capture the idea that your paragraph will be about YOUR new barriers to an accurate self-concept. On this part, I will capture the idea of overcoming communication barriers to gain confidence. For I to gain confidence, I should avoid self-defeating assumptions. This is the ability of me thinking that I can’t do it the act of fearing to speak out my ideas. This barrier has affected me on recent moments whereby I find it hard to speak out when being with others. I decided to change my perception and gain the confidence to communicate my views when in the company of others. The other barrier that I want to capture is the perception of the thing that my goals are too big. The gap between a giant target and today’s reality can be depressing. I learn that confidence originates from small repeated wins. I decided to set small goals that I could win that help me gain confidence. I thought to myself the idea that for one to be the winner, he/she has to…
Psychology On you personally In a futuristic world where sleep would be eliminated, I would gain eight more hours per day. As such, I would use the extra time to focus on achieving my goals. Consequently, I would be active during night hours and hence take extra shifts at work. This would allow me to generate more income and therefore live a more satisfactory life. On childhood, adolescence, and adulthood Today, many children and adolescents spend several hours sleeping. As such, my childhood and adolescence would be spent on building quality relationships and exploring new things about doing things. Notably, many individuals waste their early years only to become productive during their adult lives. However, the elimination of sleep would create more time to meet many friends and also build my career. On relationships (family, friendships, romantic relationships) Today, many relationships have been ruined due to lack of time to engage in meaningful interactions. As such, having extra hours per day would create time to build my relationships with family and partners. Additionally, the extra time would enable me to…
Humor and Culture in International Business In Chris Smit’s TED talk, he tries to shed more light on the vast implications of stereotypes and the sense of humor. According to Chris, every society has something unique about its culture and way of life, collectively referred to as stereotypes in this context. For instance, if one presents himself as an Italian, one of the things that are likely to linger in somebody’s mind is the Italian mafia. On the other hand, when one presents himself as a German that what comes to somebody’s mind is their failure to win the last soccer world cup tournament despite their high reputation in football. Smit further points out that different societies have different senses of humor. However, some cultures prefer making humor about others and not about themselves. For example, the Germans’ sense of humor is a real thing. They turn fun into a real business, the same to the Dutch and Britons. Concerning Smit’s talk, I believe fun can be a good strategy of alleviating stereotypical exchanges because they are not culturally neutral..…
Professional Identity and Stewardship – Part II: Leadership Interview Introduction I was able to interview a nurse named Jane. In the interview, I intended to know her role in the field of health care, how she understood leadership and professionalism, and how it would affect her. I also sought to evaluate how she was in charge of the university and whether she was a medical professional. The interview did not last long, but I was able to get the information I needed. Therefore, this document provides a brief overview of the results of the interview related to the above objectives. Role as a healthcare team . Jane’s main role is to manage the nurse professional and providing administration support while advocating for patient care. In her role as a Nurse Manager, she majorly works on collaboration between her and other people and team members. The purpose of this collaboration is to create teamwork. Teamwork is required because each nurse is encouraged to assess and evaluate his or her contributions to care and prevention outcomes. (Tanaka et al., 2016) Furthermore, Jane…
ETHICS AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Assessment. The assessment shows that I tend to strike a balance between performance, social responsibility, and ethics. I agree with the results. Most organizations gear towards maximizing profits and focusing less on ethics and social responsibilities. This might harm the organization as compared to a positive one example is the case of Junior Guzman-Feliz, a fifteen-year-old boy who was attacked in the Bronx. He ran to a nearby bodega for help, but the owner refused to help and chased him in fear. The owner was partially afraid of attracting the gunmen and also scaring the customers because of the bleeding boy. The bodega was shut down a week later because the public held the owner accountable for refusing to help the dying boy. Organizations ignore their ethical and social responsibilities and tend to focus on making money. The existence of social media has, however, changed the priorities of some organizations. This is because a slight mistake might profoundly impact the organization, as seen in the case of Junior Guzman-Feliz. One negative tweet trend can lead to…
ethical dilemmas in line of duty As social workers, we are often faced with ethical dilemmas in their line of duty. An ethical dilemma is an issue in the decision-making process between two potential alternatives, neither of which is adequate from a moral point of view. Three conditions must be available for a circumstance to be viewed as an ethical dilemma. First, the case must require an individual to settle on an intense decision. Furthermore, there must be various alternatives to choose from, and lastly, regardless of what option is picked, some ethical principle is undermined. The moral dilemma that may arise from Alex’s case is the right to self-determination. Self-determination ethical dilemma is an idea that people can settle on their own choices about their lives, and is a focal point in social work practice. To resolve this dilemma, I will have to speak to Alex about her feelings and get to understand her reasons for wanting to take the surgery to change her gender completely. I would convince Alex to stop considering suicide as it is not the…
History and culture History and culture are what define a community and how it came to exist. Michel de Montaigne, in writing the chapters of his essays, he focuses on writing about the history and culture of communities. From the New World, Montaigne says that he was very determined to know the indigenous cultures of the New World, and again he was interested and had the desire to know more about himself. Through this, we can conclude that the role of history and culture is to help people have knowledge about their past and understand how they came to be. When people are curious about how their community came to adopt certain cultures, they might go back and investigate what happened in the past. This is digging back on history to gather facts or theories that might satisfy our curiosity about things. On the other hand, Of Cannibals is another chapter of Montaigne essays that talks about history and culture. He says that if one decides to find any information about the history of a specific culture, then one must…
Fictional Short Essay A Pair of Tickets by AMY TAN is a story concerning a woman finding out her cultural identity.
