The impact of Syrian refugees on natives’ labor market outcomes in Turkey: evidence from a quasi-experimental design. Source: IZA Journal of Labor Policy. 6/13/2017, Vol. 6 Issue 1, p1-28. 28p. Civil conflict in Syria, started in March 2011, led to a massive wave of forced immigration from Northern Syria to the Southeastern regions of Turkey, which later had serious economic/political repercussions on the MENA region and most of Europe. This paper exploits this natural experiment to estimate the impact of Syrian refugees on the labor market outcomes of natives in Turkey. Using a difference-in-differences strategy, we find that immigration has considerably affected the employment outcomes of natives, while its impact on wage outcomes has been negligible. We document notable employment losses among informal workers as a consequence of refugee inflows. Formal employment increased slightly potentially due to increased social services in the region. The majority of those who lost their informal jobs have either left the labor force or remained unemployed. Formal employment and unemployment rates have increased, while labor force participation, informal employment, and job finding rates have declined among natives. Disadvantaged groups, i.e., women, younger workers, and less-educated workers, have been…
YouTube health series “How Stress Affects Your Digestion and Weight” In the YouTube health series “How Stress Affects Your Digestion and Weight”, Physician Dr. Joseph Mercola together with Marc David talk about the significant role that stress plays in hampering the digestive process. The two health practitioners point out that eating under stress leads to poor digestion and assimilation of nutrients due to the physiological response of the body to anxiety hormones. They explain ordinary stressful situations like work produce the same chemical, mental and physical responses that the body would normally have in a dangerous or violent situation such as a lion attacke. Essentially, the body diverts all its resources such as blood and oxygen to the brain to help you escape a violent or dangerous situation, thus digestion shuts down, temporarily leaving the food in your gut in order to save your life. At the same time there’s an overproduction of cortisol and insulin during stressful situations and these hormones encourage the conversion of sugar into fat, thus stressed people are unable to break down body fat or…
Veterans Administration Veterans require special treatment due to the sacrifice made for their countries. The treatment of veterans varies from state to state, with some countries openly supporting veterans through government programs while other countries decide to ignore the veterans. Also, veterans are subject to several illnesses and health complications directly related to their time in service. For example, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is common among veterans due to the exposure to traumatic experiences during the service tenure. The government should adapt to better ways of assimilating veterans into the community by creating an efficient health care system to protect them from exploitation by private companies who may take advantage of the desperation of the veterans. The government should ensure that the health care system is provided with adequate personnel. Clinical engagement increases accessibility to reliable health care while reducing the cost of assessment (Leung et al., 2018). Veterans require special attention to help them overcome the traumatic experiences they might have gone through during the time in service. The susceptibility of veterans to PTSD needs organized attention to…
