Chuck Close’s Painting Process
Chuck Close’s painting process is interestingly a learning experience for art enthusiasts as he explains his unique technique as well as the aesthetic value of the work. When the artist states that the painting “transcends its physical reality,” it indicates that the work involves a summation of different parts of the picture of reference. The whole composition is, however, the most important as it represents the kind of work he has put into achieving actual artworks that people can relate with better. He implements the grid technique, whose major idea is to get the exact features of the image. That explains why his paintings are more realistic with all the angles and scales in the right position. It helps a lot to get the proportions right and produce the kind of work he does.
The aesthetic value provided by his work is mind-blowing for the viewer, which differs in close proximity and from a distance. Looking at the work from a particular distance looks like a realistic photograph and not a painting. I almost got confused looking at these artworks until they were closer to the screen. Now it was possible to see the fine brush strokes, color blending, and contrast in the lighting (Massivemagdotcom, 2013). The realistic presentation in most of his portrait paintings defines the importance of the grids used in the process, as it makes it more admirable. The abstract and impressionism work also gave a similar feel of the perfection in color blending and connection between the different surfaces used to send a message.
Chuck’s painting is mainly on portraits that he references from photographs because he wants to give a realistic impression in his artwork. They, however, differ in the outcome due to the different elements of art applied. Unlike the photographs that are smoother and more defined, his paintings have actualized the use of lines, color, and texture to create aesthetic value in a greater size (Massivemagdotcom, 2013). They might be too realistic, but they show a certain pattern in the combination of artistic elements to achieve a more interesting feeling. Chuck makes it even more intense by changing some parts of the background and surfaces used to differentiate between his art and that of photography. The surfaces are more texturized depending on the image in question to ensure that Chuck brings out not so basic outcomes.
As part of the process, he describes the face to be the most important and time-consuming as compared to other parts of the body. He, therefore, take the picture grid and duplicates the same pattern on the drawing surface to achieve the same presentation. I liked the picture of the elderly woman the most as it included all the face details that any individual would want to experience when looking at a painting. Capturing the exact details of a picture and still being creative to change some aspects of the background and other details make an artwork more aesthetic (Massivemagdotcom, 2013).
Chuck’s illustrations on his painting process make a better option for visual representation apart from just the commercial media that most people watch today. The video shows a step by step creation of amazing pieces that are as similar as those shown on modern television. He also tells his story and explains the process used to achieve such. Apart from getting an involving description, the audience can also learn in the process and develop a passion for doing similar activities (Massivemagdotcom, 2013). Individuals are in a position to get better ways of expressing themselves, which is quite different from what we watch on modern TV. Chuck’s portrait progress is a great media that can break the monotony of the commercial media and ensure that people gain from the information presented.
