When talking about civilization, the first thing that everyone thinks about is inventions. This is very true since they have made life easy and also advanced industrialization. However, some inventions are detrimental, and cigarettes are the worst invention in history. There is no actual recording that clearly states when cigarettes were invented, but historians have indicated that cigar was used in some parts of South America by the 9th century. Cigarettes are a legal drug in almost every country in the world. Statistics show that more than one billion people smoke cigarettes; this is nearly twenty percent of the world’s population[1]. Among those inventions that are categorized with a negative impact on man, I believe cigarettes have adverse effects on them all.
Healthy people are happy people. It is ironic, therefore, as to why people continue smoking despite knowing the numerous adverse health effects that are caused by cigarette smoking. Its invention can be analogized as that of causing grief and burden instead of peace to the people. Cancer is among the leading killer disease in this present age, and many ask themselves the saddening question; what causes cancer? The answer to this is the smoking of cigarettes. What is also most saddening is the fact that smoke is the leading cause of deaths that could be prevented in the United States. So, this means if cigarettes had not been invented, then many people would have lived to fulfill their life goals. In addition to those health effects, cigarettes cause cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. The lungs are filled with carcinogenic soot that slowly affects. Moreover, cigarette smoking does not only affect those who smoke but also their families and the whole community. It is sad to note that those who suffer most are the innocent children. These children are often abused, neglected, and left to fend for themselves while their parents are busy engaging in insatiable smoking. Families and also community members are passive smokers, and medical records show that these people often show short term and long term effects in the future. There are far too many orphans and single parents’ children already. Their parents died from diseases caused by cigarette smoking. These children are the ones mostly seen on the streets, begging for food. Therefore, if cigarettes had not been invented, then the community would be a better place to live in. There are many thieves in society today. They are forced to steal by their addiction to cigarettes.
All in all, the agenda of every country is to grow economically. Tax on cigarettes generates quite substantial revenues for the government. On the other hand, imagine the production that would be attained if workers were not distracted by bad habits such as smoking cigarettes. Take the case of a pilot, he at times, but hundreds of lives when they are overpowered by the craving to smoke. By looking into facts and statistics, those countries that are leading in tobacco products are also faced with the highest cost of treating smoking-related illnesses. On a global scale, the total cost of tobacco exceeds one trillion US dollars, and this figure is equivalent to 1.8% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product. At present, it very vital for our government to put regulations and rules concerning cigarette production, vending, and smoking. It is the ultimate solution to curbing all the problems that come with it.
