Civil Right and Liberties
Civil rights are the rights that individuals have in society regardless of race, religion, or even sex, for instance, the right to vote, right for a fair trial. On the other hand, civil liberties refer to freedom from government interference on the rights of a citizen, for instance, freedom of speech, freedom of assembly. Civil rights are the provisions of the constitution of things mandatory for the government to ensure the citizens enjoy them. Civil liberties include the state of being subject only to laws that are for the good of society.
Protecting the liberties established in the First Amendment have been cited to be the cornerstone of democracy. Democracy involves free and fair representation and protection of the rights of citizens. Protecting civil liberties ensures the government does not interfere with the laws set for the good of the people and the good of the community. People are allowed to practice the religion of their choice, to practice the freedom of assembly, and express their views and opinions as long they are not breaking the law. Thi protection of liberties shows the real meaning of democracy when the government fails to interfere with its people.
