Civility essay
Civility is the act of politeness or a set of behaviour that promotes and contributes to the preservations of norms for smoothness and mutual respect in social relationships or at work. Being civil involves creating time and the right atmosphere for purposeful and intentional dialogue. Attaining civility happens when the parties involved aim to achieve a common purpose without focusing attention on whoever is right or wrong. Creating and maintaining civility in work or education environment is of vital importance as it promotes quality and healthy interactions. However, uncivil behaviours are still rampant in education and practice settings.
Civility is essential in practice and education settings as it helps build healthy communities and functioning teams as well as fostering effective communication. It also reduces the stress levels, promotes high self-esteem, improves the relationship and enhances workplace safety (Clarke, 2017). Practicing civility in nursing educations plays a crucial role in promoting civility in practice and academic environments.
One area of personal strength that is vital in the nursing profession is the possession of compassion and empathy. As a nurse educator, these two virtues are essential in handling nurses as most of them deal with a lot of psychological issues as they start their careers. Anxiety, fear and anger are emotions every nurse experiences. Therefore to develop this area of strength more, i’m learning to be an attentive and good listener and challenge my stereotypes and prejudice.
Self-care is crucial as a health care professional. Healthcare is a very demanding and stressful profession that can lead to fatigue and burn out. Therefore, it makes safe care an essential area of personal growth that should not be subject to neglect. To achieve this, I’m planning to engage in creative pursuits like drawing, enroll in fitness classes, and spend more time with family. Having balanced work and social life is my goal.
One of the incivility behaviours that I’m likely to encounter as a new nursing faculty is intimidation. While most members in the nursing faculty are responsible professionals, some exhibit behaviours that are contrary to the expected code of ethics. The students can also use disrespectful and taunting comments. To prevent this from happening, I plan to establish a good foundation by having excellent communication with the other faculty members and students also.this will help identify problems before they arise or solve them appropriately before they get out of hand.
For new nurses, the incivility behaviours likely to be encountered are vast, but the most common ones are being isolated, ignored and blamed when mistakes occur. To avoid this from happening, I would advise the nurse to develop self-awareness as it would help to deal with the incivility by being able to recognize how other people interpret their behaviours, words and actions. As a result, the nurse would be able to know how to interact and communicate with the other colleagues.
All nurses involved in the education and practice settings should foster ethical, civil and safe work and education places. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and uncivil behaviours often arise. Incivility costs are vast as they cause disruptive behaviours, which creates an atmosphere of stress, disrespect and conflict. New nurses and nurse faculties undergo difficult transitioning when encountered by uncivil behaviours at the workplace. Civility fosters healthy working relationships and atmosphere.
