Cognitive Behavior Therapy
Question 1
Automatic thought
The automatic thought observed was the conclusion that Nicole had after lengths of treating his older brother chronic illness. She presumed that since she was now doing well, then it had to be his turn to begin the treatment. The therapy sessions that her brother went through seemed to have taken a toll on the sister, an aspect that seemed to make her believe that somehow she had to undergo the same therapy.
Cognitive distortion observed
The distortion I observed was jumping to a conclusion in the sense that Nicole already made up her mind that whatever treatment her brother had gone through based on his chronic conditions (Corey, 2017). Her mother was also decided that her daughter needed to speak to counselor based on the experiences her brother had gone through; she did not have a medical opinion but made the assumptions anyway.
I think a multicolumn worksheet was very beneficial as it offered the clients a chance to write down what they have learned, what the feel as well as remind them of what they need to do and the steps they have taken so far.
Question 2
I think cognitive behavior therapy is very beneficial in counseling, especially if practiced correctly. The progress made with the clients depends on the mastery of the skill as well as the level of mental illness under treatment. The therapist also needs to understand that cognitive behavior therapy is still in progress, and further research needs to be undertaken to improve its efficiency (Corey, 2017). The idea of structured theory makes me very uncomfortable as the abilities of therapies vary. This, therefore, means that the success of the therapy depends on the level of qualification and skills of the therapist.
