College Athletes Getting Paid
Students in higher learning institutions participate in sporting activities during their time in college. Athletics is part of co-curriculum activities, which are necessary for students to relax before they resume with their studies. However, not all college students are involved in athletics. Some students participate in sporting activities, but after sometimes they give up and quit athletics. The trend has been contributed by the failure of colleges to pay the students excel in sporting activities. Many students who are talented in sports quit athletics while in colleges because they are not rewarded for their efforts.
Most colleges are concerned only about academics, and they do not give equal concern to athletics. Colleges reward the students who excel in academics by gifting them or offering sponsorships for them. However, this is not similar to the students who excel in athletics. Most students quit athletics while in college because they are not motivated by some rewards like the other students who excel in academics. A research was carried out to investigate the experiences of college athletes (Romo,496). The athletes of a highly ranked institution were interviewed in the process of collecting the required data. The participants were informed about the study in advance for their availability. Face to face interview was conducted with seventeen participants. All the participants participated in different sporting activities in the college. Eleven of the participants were male while six of the participants were female. Three of the participants were first-year students, three were second-year students, and the other eleven were third-year students. The interviews were conducted at a convenient time and the responses were evaluated. The results showed that college athletes feel powerless and frustrated because they lack college support. The students responded that their sporting activities entertain the public, but they are not paid for the service. Therefore, most college athletes give up in athletics because they lack motivation from their colleges.
College students who participate in sporting activities deserve payments from the colleges just like the other students who excel in academics (Steckler,1071). The students entertain college staff and other students during the college sporting days. The athlete-students feel that it is their right to be paid for their entertainment services they offer. Also, some colleges plan for the teaching timetables without considering the athlete-students who also need time to practice in the field. Students who participate in athletics have witnessed bright students being paid for their excellent academic performances. Most of the colleges offer jobs and scholarships for the students who excel in class work, but this is not the case for the students who excel in co-curriculum activities. The students interested in sporting activities deserve to be rewarded for their sporting achievements. Colleges should find networks for the students who are talented in sporting activities and help them to join international teams as a means of paying them for their efforts.
In conclusion, most colleges do not give equal privileges to the students who are talented in sports as students who are gifted in academics. Students who excel in academics are paid in different ways for their efforts, but students who make achievements in sports are not paid for their efforts. Most students in colleges who are talented in sports gives up in their sporting dreams due to lack of college support. Talented students in athletics should be paid for their efforts in co-curriculum activities. Students who are interested in sports deserve to be treated equally as students who are interested in academics.
