College Freshmen Dropout
School completion and dropout are among the main issues that have challenged special and general educators and leaders of schools for an extended period. According to statistics, 50 % of first-year college students drop out of school after their first year. In this reaction paper, I have given my viewpoints concerning this matter and discussed the reasons why I can not be part of the statistic.
Lack of enough funds to cater for a college education is the leading factor that contributes to most first-year college students drop out. Even though the students have school loans, the cost of schooling always remains high. Students spent their money to pay rent, pay for classes, and in buying of books. Students find it necessary to get a full-time job to cater to their bills, and for this reason, they do not attend most of the classes. Many students only take one or a few classes. This poor attendance is for reducing the workload. The students find it unnecessary to dive into what professors teach in class. Their only aim is to complete that particular degree.
Family members are helpful, while one is at school. In college, however, family issues are a considerable burden and stressor for most students. In case of an emergency in a family, students take some time off school to assist the family. Too much destruction by emergencies from home can result in the student dropping out of school forever to assist and be with the family members.
It is stressful to attend college. Personal life responsibilities, sense of independence, and much coursework demands can pose a challenge to a college freshman because the student was not used to a lifestyle of this kind while in high school. It may take time before students know how to handle these responsibilities correctly.
At college, the sense of personal freedom takes control of student’s life. College students find it to be fun to enjoy life in college and meet new people. Students utilize much of their time in these fun activities and fail to study. This wastage of time results in failures in exams, which then results in them dropping out of school with the belief that it is hard to pass in exams.
Lack of proper advice also results in school drop out in college. Many students don’t take their time to visit advisors when in need. Other students only depend on advice from one source, for example, a friend, and if the advice does not help, they decide to quit school instead of seeking advice from another source.
Dropping out of school is unnecessary because the problems which contribute to these can easily be solved. In case a student finds the cost of education to be high, the student should consider taking a loan or getting help from the school’s financial aid office. Family issues should not stress students out. In case of family emergencies, a student should discuss the matter with the professor, given the responsibility to help make a plan on how the student will finish the coursework on time. A student should find time to study despite of the much workload and fun in college.
School dropout will result in a student regretting in the future for the action. Dropping out of school is generally associated with a lack of fees, the stress of college life, much sense of personal freedom, and lack of proper advice. Finding ways to fight these challenges will result in fewer first-year college students dropping out of school.
