concept of a single story and to explore its significance by examining a single story
Objective: to describe and define the concept of a single story and to explore its significance by examining a single story you are familiar with. In Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s TED Talk “The Danger of a Single Story,” she discusses the concept of how a single story comes to define entire groups of people. In her opinion, this becomes dangerous, as it leads to stereotypes. For this essay, you will explore this concept, as you refer to both personal experience and the TED talk. You must use Adichie’s video as one source for your essay. If you would like, you can also bring in Sharon Begley’s article, “The Stereotype Trap” or Judith Ortiz Cofer’s essay “The Myth of the Latin Woman.” Finally, if you want to use any other sources from our class or found on your own outside of class via research, you certainly can–just talk to me if you would like help integrating them. Choose one of the essay options below: Reflect on a single story that has played a role in your life. [unique_solution]This may mean it was a single story that defined you or it could be a single story that you had about someone else. You should discuss what the single story is, where you think this story comes from, and how it played a role in your life–whether you were the one who was the subject of the single story or the one who believed the single story about someone else. Your thesis should argue how this single story impacted you, your thoughts and actions, your goals and choices in life, your identity, etc. Ultimately, you should try to argue why a single story can be dangerous. Remember: you must begin your essay by laying the groundwork of the TED Talk and Adichie’s concept. You can then structure the paper however you wish from there, as long as you are using examples to describe the single story and how it played a role in defining identity. It is also helpful to examine where this single story might have come from, or at least how it has appeared in your/our culture in the past or recently.
