Conjoined Twins
We can all agree to disagree with the decision that was made. However, one may never know what to do until the person is tested and put in that situation. Although the healthier twin was able to keep the ill health twin alive, the condition was deteriorating at a high rate. After learning the conditions of the twins, I can understand why the parents wanted to do whatever was possible for the girls. One twin heart was essentially normal; the other twin’s heart was malformed. The twins shared the same liver, bladder, and other organs. One was active, while the other was not. If the twin with the ill health died, the healthier one would die too. Separating the twins does not guarantee safe separation. This is a tough decision to make as parents, especially when the outcome is not promising. In this case, I agree with the decision as it was the only option.
If I were the parent to the conjoined twins, it would tear me apart to separate them. However, if I had to take a risk, I would decide to save the healthier kid of the two. I would give the healthy twin a fighting chance. Waiting on nature to take its course may not have been the best solution as one twin was growing weaker. I would let nature take its course if and only if I was instructed to do so by God. In certain situations, non-interference may be the best policy; if both twins were healthy with normal life expectancy, we would feel differently about separating them. However, in this case, it is very different. This is a loss situation, as stated in the article, ‘’faced with two bad outcomes.” therefore, a little bit of faith goes a long way. I would keep my prayers up and hope for the best.
