construction process and trade sequencing on a building site

Task 1 (40 marks)

The best way for you to learn about the construction process and trade sequencing on a building site is to watch the process yourself! Find, watch and document the progress of a house (Class 1 under the BCA) under construction. This assignment and assignment 14 may take several weeks to complete, so you may want to work on, and submit subsequent assessments while you are working on these.

  1. Take photos at various stages during the construction of a Class 1 building and relate each stage to those in one of the reference texts such as Building Your Own Home by George Wilkie (2011) which follows the construction stages sequentially. The Australian House Building Manual by Allan Staines (2014) also has excellent illustrations at all stages of construction and for different building types. You should have at least 3 photographs for each of the following stages (note that subsequent stages will be required for assignment 12):
    • Site preparation – you should try to include erosion and sediment control, signage, fencing, excavation, demolition[unique_solution]
    • Footings – you should try to include excavation, vapour barrier, reinforcement, termite control, insulation material if relevant
    • Floor – for bearers & joists: pier locations, sub-floor ventilation, termite control, floor framing; for slab: under slab preparation, reinforcement, services, finishing
  1. Make brief but concise notes (dot points) describing what can be observed in each of the photographs. Include details of materials used, fixings used, products used, as appropriate.

iii.      Produce hand drawn, fully labelled sketches (an appropriate scale would be to fit an A4 page) for the footing and floor system. (Note: a plan view of the floor plus one or two details should adequately define the system) Make sure that your sketches are neat and legible.
