credible and useful information that the reader might use to gain a better understanding of the topic being discussed
The purpose of an article is to provide credible and useful information that the reader might use to gain a better understanding of the topic being discussed. Through writing, the author(s) try to communicate their ideas, findings, and conclusions in the hopes that they have been able to shed light on the issue being discussed. To convey their message to their target audiences, writers employ the use of several tools to ensure their message is conveyed. These tools include rhetoric appeals and strategies for effective communication. The author uses the rhetoric strategies of narration, description, and the use of examples to further his or her cause. In addition to this, to appeal to the audience, the writer appeals to their logic (logos), a timeline of the work (Kairos), emotions (pathos) as well as their respect for the author’s credibility (ethos). These elements are crucial for the author(s) to relay their message and ideas to their audiences who are the readers.
For a better understanding of how authors use these two rhetoric elements, I will have the opportunity of carrying out a rhetorical analysis of a professional level article and how the authors used rhetoric strategies and analysis. Michael J. Ward, Keith A. Marsolo and Craig M. Froehle are authors who wrote the analytical article titled, “Applications of business analytics in healthcare” that focuses on the importance of analytics on the healthcare system and how analytics has helped improve the healthcare system in the country. The three authors hail from the Department of Emergency Medicine, Division of Biomedical Informatics, and the college of medicine, University of Cincinnati. The article was published in 2014 in the journal Business Horizons. The article was research conducted on the importance of the application of analytics in the healthcare sector, and thus, the target audience is the current stakeholders of the healthcare system. Ward and his colleagues note the fundamentals involved in analytics as well as the challenges that they face the adoption of analytics by the healthcare industry.
The authors of the article, Ward, Marsolo, and Froehle, aim at creating awareness of the benefits posed by adopting analytics within the healthcare system. By doing so, they also highlight some of the problems that lead to the healthcare industry’s failure to adopt the technology because of issues such as cost. The authors note that the adoption of analytics in healthcare will help to improve the distribution, accessibility, and availability of healthcare services in the country. Also, an important aspect to note that the adoption of analytics will improve health delivery services to patients. Therefore, the authors employ the use of rhetorical appeals of pathos, logos, ethos, and Kairos to make the readers aware of the benefits of analytics. In addition, it uses rhetoric strategies of examples and analysis to highlight their topic of discussion. Thus, in the following sections of this paper, I will try to examine and analyze the use of rhetorical appeals and strategies employed by the three authors to convey their ideas to their target audience.
