Cultural Identity
Diversity is one of the significant aspects of interaction at the University of Pennsylvania. Being an international academic center, the University of Pennsylvania has promoted the convergence of students from different cultures. These interactions are experienced through games and sports, classwork, and social events. Cultural identity begins with understanding one’s cultural background. This usually controls the personal perspectives perceptions about life and other cultures in general.
I will explore the University of Pennsylvania community by taking part in many social events like parties. This will promote my understanding of the different cultures of other non-native students. While engaging in social activities like dancing and movies, I will be keen to make friends with students and other staff members to gain insight into their likes and hobbies.
The community at the university is too broad, but some areas at the facility are strategic in promoting a higher engagement rate. Some shopping areas, cafeteria, cyber places are areas where one is likely to meet many students within a short duration. I will volunteer to work as a cafeteria as an attendant to serve the clients. This will give me more information on the types of meals liked by people from different cultures. I will also note the members who have the same social identities as the one I possess, the form of language used, and the words in their communication. I will further engage some of them in some friendly jokes to get their perspectives about life.
Additionally, I will be open-minded in understanding the different viewpoints of my friends, especially from different cultures. This will shape my stand by eliminating some dogmas and prejudices.
