cultural practices
Consider one of the cultural practices/topics that we discussed in class or a comparable topic that interests you. Explore the practice/topic within a culture different from the one we focused on in class or read about in One World, Many Cultures textbook. For example, we learned about the practice of arranged marriage in India, so your paper might explore the practice of arranged marriage in a different culture. Your project should use as resources at least three research sources which are not in the textbook. •Because of the nature and goals of the HUM 101: Cultures and Values curriculum, you should consider writing principally about a foreign (i.e., non-US American) cultural topic. Also, the main topic of your paper should not be based on your own (or your family’s) culture. Of course, you may compare/contrast the cultural topic you are exploring with a comparable practice in your own culture, U.S. American culture, or with a cultural practice we read about in the Hirschberg text. •All essays should be submitted in both printed form and as .doc/.docx file e-mail attachments. •(unique_solution)All essays should be written in MLA-style. Give credit to each of your research sources by citing them in the text where you have used them. All sources should be listed on an MLA formatted Works Cited page at the end of the paper. (Note that this page is not included in the above page-counts). •Do your best to accurately paraphrase (put in your own words) ideas from research sources while giving credit to the authors. Be sure to include some quotations to support your ideas. Suggested topics: • An abusive practice such as child labor, modern slavery, human trafficking, or system of administering “justice” in one country/culture • A particular tradition related to marriage or family life • A particular custom or rite of passage related to birth, achieving adulthood, or death • How the arrival of some form of modern technology or Western culture has changed a traditional ethnic society • The concept of work and identity and how it differs in other countries • Or a topic of your own choosing – which must have as its center an exploration of Cultures and Values in different countries
