Dance as a form
Dance is a form of art purposefully made through recreating chosen sequences of human motions possible to be imbued with aesthetic value and symbolism that are recognized by both observers and performers from a particular culture. Since the dawn of human civilization, dance is still connected to human beings. To bring back the history of dances that show a fascinating part of human culture, all kinds of roots in ancient civilization to these modern times, a proper survey has to be done. As part of my assigned task that was purposely aimed to bring the history of dances back, I was able to find Mr. Mario, a Native American man who is in his 80s. Throughout our conversation, I was much interested to know more about the dances of their times. As part of the interview, there are several questions that I had already developed in my questionnaire to guide and help me focus on the topic. With the aid of a sound recorder, I asked Mario several questions, and he provided feedback, as shown below.
Question 1
When and where was your first time to attend dances, and how old were you?
Answer
I attended my first dance in 1953. The event was a night dance that was organized by youths in Las Vegas. By the time I attended that dance, I was about 15 years old.
Question 2
Was that your first time to hear about dances, if no, how did you take any initiative to attend before?
Answer
No, that was not my first time to come across dances. I used to hear from my friends and family member about dancing events. Furthermore, during end year celebrations and grand ceremonies, I witnessed my older brother sneaking out of the house to attend the dances. By then, I was much interested in attending the events, but since I was still a school kid, my parents were rigorous on me, and they could monitor all my moves, so I was afraid to disobey their orders.
Question 3
When you first attended the night dance in Las Vegas, whom did you do with?
Answer
I remember very well that my parents had gone for a vacation and I was left with my older brother. Since he wanted to attend the event, I managed to convince him to take me there.
Question 4
At that night event, what kind of dance was performed there?
Answer
The event attracted several dancing styles, first there was Rumba, salsa dance, and Cha-Cha a favorite dance with Cuban origin.
Question 5
From that experience, did you attend other events?
Answer
Yes, I can say that it was the first and start for me. I grew an interest not only in dances, but I could listen to other music, and I was able to master all the dancing styles. I develop a habit of attending various ceremonies and night events. I also joined one of the bands that were practicing Salsa dance.
Question 6
What was the name of the band you joined as a member and the activities of the group?
I managed to join the Charanga band in New York. The band was dedicated to performing the Salsa dance in hotels, restaurants, and clubs whenever invited.
Question 7
Could you tell me what exactly that Salsa dance involves?
Answer
Salsa is a Cuban origin dance. The dance involves a partner even though they may recognize it as solo forms like dancing “Rueda de Casino” and “suelta” where several couples usually exchange partners in a circle.
Question 8
Who was your partner in the group?
Answer
I used to dance with my girlfriend, whom I found in the group when I was still a new member.
Question 9
Apart from Salsa, was there a type of dances that the band practiced? If yes, what were the models?
Answer
Yes, as the band, we had to be professional; hence we practice other forms of dancing and music styles to accommodate our fans and audiences. The techniques include the performance of Cha-Cha and Rumba forms of music and dance.
Question
Could you tell me more about the Rumba and Cha-Cha style of your time?
Answer
When dancing the Rumba we used to embody a sassy, sensual demeanor and smooth move. In the details, the move set is very in particular. However, the most significant feature in Rumba is to keep connected to your partner. Also, the toes should be at a slight diagonal to permit a suitable hip movement. The motion is one of the Cuban the same way it is expressed in the Salsa dance that I am going o describe for you. Generally talking on fact, and fan rumba is the slowest type of dancing I experienced during our time.
On the other hand, Cha Cha was a Latin dance that had its origin from Cuba and evolved via Danzon, which is another older form of Cuban dance. A central difference in Cha Cha is an additional step that replaced the slow step in Rumba dance. There was also a dressing code when performing this type of dance. For instance, women used to wear a dress with ruffles having bright colors. The color of the shoes matched with the dress, and they were high heels. On our side as men, we as men used to wear ruffles on dresses bottom and the sleeves.
